One of my peer counselors (I'm the breastfeeding coordinator at a local WIC for

those that don't know)called earlier asking for input to help a mom she's

helping. I don't have all the details but here is what I know so far.

Baby born @8lb 8oz in December.

Doctor appt two days ago weighed 12lb 7oz!

Doctor told her to stop breastfeeding completely

and to stop solids..only formula.

Mom is " beside herself " , she successfully breastfed two other children and has

some experience and wants to continue bfing.

She does not know what to do but definately wants a new pediatrician.

Mom has been stressed as well, threw out heroine addicted husband in April.

Wonders if her milk supply has been affected. Baby shows no

signs of increased hunger. Mom reports feeding about every two hours, pees and

poops as expected.

My thoughts:

1. Possible undetected heart defect or underlying infection using

up calories.

2. ? milk quality, maybe have fat analysis done?

3. Malabsorption issue?

4. Have mom pump for a few days so she can document for pedi that baby

got 27-32ish oz of breastmilk? Let baby continue comfort nursing but supply

pumped breastmilk in sippy cup (won't take a bottle)just so intake can be

measured?

What would your approach be with this mom?

Thanks,

Ilene

looking forward to ILCA!
