Guest guest
Ok, ladies, I need some wisdom. I saw mom originally for sore nipples and i suspected TT, but it's not absolutely clear. and they never pursued clipping. She eventually was able to nurse w/o pain and some supplementing. Baby breastfed very well when I saw them. I hadn't heard from her in a couple weeks, then learned baby was diagnosed with reflux. Baby cried constantly and seemed to be in pain during bfing. Ped diagnosed reflux and told mom to pump and dump and get off soy and dairy. Baby is on alimentum now and mom says initially baby seemed to feel better, but now still crying unless he's asleep. Pooping seems to be painful for him. mom's supply is going down the toilet with the stress and just pumping. After 1.5 weeks of pump and dump I told her to PLEASE at least save her milk. I guess I convinced her that her milk isn't poison, so she tried breastfeeding again yesterday. So here's the weird part:Baby screamed in pain after about 2 min. of nursing. She burped him and tried again and got the same reaction. She said he was definitely swallowing and his latch was good. No porblem with overactive let down. she said the rest of the day was worse than usual. I suggested she try some pumped milk to rule out that it was something about the actual breastfeeding, but she's afraid to. Baby is now about 1 month old. they are seeing a GI doc tomorrow.I've suggested some body work for the baby (we have a wonderful PT here who has trained with an osteopath) and that possibly this isn't about particular foods. My guess is with the initial supplementing of formula, his gut got sensitized/damaged and now he's in a vicious cycle of artificial feeding/pain...I've been helping moms and babies with breastfeeding for nearly 20 years and I've never heard of anything like this. Has anyone heard of breastfeeding being painful?Thank you all!
