Jeff,

Welcome. We need more men on this list!

You will love Dr K and/or Dr. Z. Both are very caring men.

As for questions, just start asking. What ever comes to mind, and we

will answer it all. We are the Great and Powerful OZ. LOL. No question

that you have will be trivial, or stupid. So, start asking. Do you know

anything about the DS surgery?

Jim

First Question

OK...First question. To start with what kind of questions do I need

to ask? I am not sure where to start.

Hi Jim,

Well, I don't know any specifics. What I do know is what my friend

told me about her experience and she was very positive. I also

went through the website last night. I guess I have two

questions at the moment. 1. How long are you " down " after

surgery - I mean really, not what the dr. recommends. And 2. I

have had an umbilical hernia. That surgery was PAINFUL! I have

been looking at some pics here at the group site. This looks 10x

as bad. I feel some large amounts of fear and I haven't even

commited to the procedure yet. Help!

Jeff,

Trust your friend, since s/he has been though it. Since you are friend

with him/her, you know that your friend won't lie to you about the

surgery.

The down time varies for each person. Dr. K told me (and most of us) to

plan on 8 weeks of down time. My friend in Santa was back at work

1/2 days two weeks post op, and full days 3 weeks post op. In my case, I

was more or less down for about 6 weeks. Not in bed, but a lot of

resting up. I am now 9 weeks post op, and I still have to pace myself.

The fist Sunday after I came home, it took me an HOUR AND 15 minutes to

get ready for church! Now, it takes me about 10 minutes excluding

shower. The first time I went to the market after surgery wiped me out

and I slept about 5 hours. When you come home just getting out of bed

makes you need a nap. LOL Much of your down time will depend on your

physical condition pre op. A good exercise programme now will help.

Walk, walk, walk! Also, when you come home, the more you walk the

faster you recover.

I had a RNY years ago. They didn't close me up -- well, just closed my

skin. I had to have that repaired 3 years later. The RNY was the worst

of the three surgeries I've had. Other than fatigue, this DS (well, the

revision of the RNY and the DS) wasn't bad. It was about as bad as the

repair the non-hernia surgery. Again, how bad the surgery is for you

depends on your pain tolerance, and if there are any complications. I

developed an infection (not uncommon in any surgery), and that added to

the fatigue.

I can honestly tell you that in my case, the fatigue was/is much worse

than the actual surgery and recovery.

Does this help? You should have some apprehension, but don't fear this.

You must decide which is worse: the complications coming from obesity,

or a couple of weeks of pain/discomfort because of surgery.

AWW Jeff, did ya see my surgery pics yet? I know you saw my scar at

least! OK, in my opinion it was painful, but the DISCOMFORT was worse

than the pain. The weird, ICKY wasted and exhausted feeling was what

I hated! It took me 2 months to feel human, 3 months to feel good,

and 4 months to feel GREAT! Honey, if me - the complete wussy and

whiner can do it, you can handle it!

HUGS to you and Kimmie!

Cindee (who just realized she is on Rays yahoo name...OOPS!)

Yes Jeff, like Jim says... " just trust me " (hehehe)

OK, I will tell all and share all! Believe me, it was the hardest

thing I ever went through, but was it worth it? Hell yes! Did it

hurt, HELL YES! Was the pain controllled and did it get better, Damn

right it was! You have read and heard my story already so I won't go

over it again, but if anyone else is willing to share the surgery

experence and after effects with Jeff as well as Myrna and some of

the other preops - it would be GREAT!

Cindee (who has an evil wicked grin - trust me, ME? REALLY?)

Hi Jim!

I log onto Rays yahoo on occasion to visit a certain couples group

that we are members of.....I just forgot I was still on his name when

I came into Dr K's group (Ray is also a member as my support person)

Are we an item? HELL, YES! And we are a damn fine one at that! LOL,

he is the love of my life, my soulmate, my best friend, and

confidante and I wouldn't trade him for the world! (not to mention he

puts up with all my crap, lets me nag, and spoils me rotten - PLUS he

changed my tampax and wiped my butt after surgery!) Yup, he's a

keeper! And he gives darn good hugs too!

Cindee (the better half of Ray - and a good friend of Jeff's too!)
