Guest guest
Hi, Everyone....Laci...your post brought back many bad memories of the past....also from my MIL/SIL who insisted that all Gareth needed was a good smack on his butt, if I only 'loved' him, etc. To this day, he can not handle bowling alleys and has seen two movies over the past ten years...only one, willingly. It took years before my MIL could grasp the autism concept.....to her it was all my fault that G had the behaviors he had. We are talking 10-12 yrs ago....you would think things would be different in this 'age of autism'......I guess not. My MIL got the 'message' through my telling my SIL about the autism as I learned more myself. Fortunately, my DH was always by my side and supported our 'lack of participation'. The good news....my MIL is the nicest person to Gareth nowadays......it just took her years to learn about the autism dx. My suggestion.....everything that you can find depicting autism and their sensory problems....print it off and mail it to family members and highlight parts saying 'this is Landon' or 'this is how Landon would react'. It takes time (years!!!) but it will eventually 'click' Better yet, tell them you will go IF they are the ones taking full responsibility for Landon. What will that take.....one or two minutes before they 'get the picture'???? My prayers are with you.....been there. Take care, Everyone.
