Guest guest
Hi ~ We used Dylan's stoller probably till he was 6. Not necessarily because he couldn't walk, but because it was easier for us to have him in the stoller to avoid " stop-drop-flops. " So between 6 & 10 he always climbed into the cart at the grocery stores. When I would walk with him to the park or around town We had one of those carts that you pull behind a bike which had a handle that went on it so you could push it too, and we used that alot. It wasn't very convenient to take anywhere else though, other than the zoo. Other wise we didn't have a stoller or anything else. Now, Dylan is 11, will be 12 in May. He still tries to crawl in the grocery cart, which is quite a scene. I am not letting him do that anymore. He uses wheelchairs when we are at a zoo or anywhere that has them, even the department stores. He just doesn't like to walk and it seems like if he does for a while he starts popping his ankles really bad and switching feet while he's standing, like they are tingling or something - my guess. A while back I posted about what other have done in and got some great advice. I decided to order the Mac Laren major special needs stroller. I had some $ left from our county's family support program & was able to use that to pay for it. I am happy with it. My husband of course doesn't see that it's necessary & thinks we should make him walk. But since I'm the one with him most of the time and like to avoid as much conflict as possible I think it's necessary. Dylan just seems more content and " at ease " when he's in his own space. Good luck! Becky Mitch0519@... wrote: Adam will be 4 soon. I was wonder when you all stopped using a stroller for you kids? Adam is limited in walking. He wears AFO's and is still tiny for his age. Guest guest
Ohhh... I went and bought a double stroller when I was expecting my second child. That was when Jordan was seven years old. She fit great in the front seat with the bar removed. She's now 11, weighs 55 pounds and I STILL put her in the front when she gets tired of walking (in a mall etc.) Judi S. strollers > Adam will be 4 soon. Guest guest
When Elie first outgrew his baby stroller, I looked at " adaptive strollers " . They were so very expensive and looked so " handicapped " . OF course I still had visions of his looking and being more typical than as it turns out he was able. Anyway, I ended up buying a Jogging stroller which held him from age 6 until about age 15. (The top weight was 120 lbs.) I bought a " refurbished " stroller " Baby Jogging Stroller II " with leg extensions. They now come in an easily folding form. When I bought it, it only folded down, but was still about 5' long. We put it on top of the roof of the car with hold down straps. Hope this helps! Guest guest
I was able to get a " stroller " from a medical supply company. My insurance company, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, paid for 80% of it...... It looks like a cross between an umbrella stroller and a wheelchair. We LOVE it!! I just had to get a note from s doctor that it was medically necessary, the medical supply company took care of everything and came out and measured and showed me what products were available. The remaining 20% and Balance of his deductible were paid for with funds from our local DDA office. Caryn Inglis, Mom to 7 kids, including , DS/Autism, 8 yo... and a new baby due in February too!!
