Owning a bowling alley

Some of the ppeople for whom the Sounthern Poverty Law Center have won big

time property settlements have chosen to keep the property for their own

use. Others have sold the property for cash to more clearly and nearly

realize their dream. SPLC philosophy, as I understand it, is to deprive

bigots of their funding source. Suits me big time. No money leaves a lower

likelyhood of political clout and ability to fund an organization.

Sara,

Well, frankly, I took the weekend off from this. I was too angry to be rational

about it. This morning I am speaking with the owner. It is very odd since two

years ago I interviewed him for an article and he went on and on about how they

had invested all this money so that PWD would be customers. It makes little

sense to expend that capitol and then deny people its use.

As far as suing them, that's for someone else. I am curious as to how the ADA

complaint is handled. The young adults who participated have, finally, become

quite angry. We'll see where it leads. It may be an opportunity for an ADAPT

action. -- I am tired of hitting on the state government offices - it would be

fun to blockade a bowling alley for a change.

We'll see how it plays out.

Thanks to you and everyone else for your support and comments.

Can you let us know what he plans on doing with the employee that caused

this?

I will.

So far we are in sort of a hiatus and part of it is intentional.

I cited section 504 knowing full well it doesn't apply -- it requires federal

money. But it lays out the dilemma well.

Time will tell.

- count me there. Maybe even Andy too, should he be amenable. Hollywood

Bowl is supposed to be one of the " safe " places to go.

I'll loan you a pair of Rex's handcuffs for you and Eleanor (Eleanor and ?)

to handcuff yourselves to the doors if needed. :)

The time comes, Sara, when all of us are " called out. "

This is not a big deal in the big picture but I want to know why anyone should

be treated like this. I am a simple man. I only know simple things. And one of

them is that we are all here together for a short time. Why are we so mean to

each other?

I imagine my own birth. What do I want? Food, warmth and cleanliness? Once those

things are taken care of I learn joy and laughter and the pure happiness of

being alive.

Imagine yourself with hydrocephalus, or autism, or Down syndrome. You are just a

tiny, innocent person full of happiness to be alive. Your food, your body, your

family, your little stuffed animals, the joy of being. You have happiness that

we adults can only imagine. The dawn of awareness. And, then, slowly you learn

that people don't want you. You're head is too big. You are too weird.

What happens then? What do you think? Can you still revel in that baby joy at

life? Do you feel sad? Rejected? Inferior? Do you still smile?

I don't know. But I do know that I am righteously sick to death of it. My life

is pretty much over. I am sort of impervious to hurt.

But I have enough left to tell you that people who set out to hurt, belittle or

make fun of my little innocent child are in for a world of hurt.

What she thinks is that people should be kind. That sums it up. And what on

earth is wrong with that?

I have been reading with interest the saga of the " bowling alley incident. " I

just want to chime in a little.

I truly appreciate the glimpse into what you feel for your daughter and your

very righteous anger at how the world sometimes treats her, and how she and her

friends were specifically discriminated against at the bowling alley. Your

empathy shines through your writing.

I often share with my 13 year-old daughter, when she wonders aloud why other

people can treat her 11 year-old brother (DS and medical problems) so horribly,

that just because someone is older that it doesn't mean they are " mature. "

Maturity is when you CAN empathize with another, that you can put yourself in

their place and regulate your own behaviors accordingly. Age is not an

indicator of maturity, behavior is! My 13 year-old understands this and it

helps her to realize that sometimes she is acting more maturely than even adults

do!

I agree with you, we raise our children to be kind; we expect others to show

our children kindness. But when the ugliness of discrimination, the singling

out of our children as an object for cruelty or refusing access to what everyone

else is entitled to, makes us angry and protective. We need wisdom in those

moments so that we can bring understanding and true change into those

situations. That we can leave the world better than we found it. I pray that

you tap into that wisdom and find the best way to address this situation,

because it is obvious the situation needs addressing. It's your turn at bat and

we are cheering for you. How you choose to address the situation will also

affect all of the young people involved as they see how they can positively

change their world as they watch your actions. I am not preaching, just

comfirming what you already know to be true.

I thought you might be interested to note that my local paper: the Sacramento

Bee, has been running a series of articles on this very issue of discrimination

and the lawsuits that have risen out of it.

http://www.sacbee.com/101/story/75542.html is where you can find the first of

three articles. Very interesting.

May you find the best road for you and your daughter, and may you find the

strength to pursue it to it's finish.

And , I agree whole-heartedly and emphatically. This is how Andy sees

things. He is very stymied by things that do not go kindly.

And this trait is one i look for in everyone I call, " friend " a term I use with

care. You are one I count as friend.
