Guest guest
Wow! This is interesting to hear how many of us are on some kind of anti-depressant. My doctor just put me on Lexapro, because she thought it would help balance me out and feel happy again (normally happy, not out of control happy). She put me on 10mg 1x a day. I couldn't stand it -- I lasted 5 days and had to stop. It was keeping me up at night with hot flashes, and then I was tired during the day, I felt like my heart was beating outside my body, and I felt borderline nauseous all the time. It said that the side effects would lesson after a few weeks, but I couldn't stand and quit after 5 days. A few weeks later I was having a bad week and thought I'd try it again. I only lasted 1 day. I've been told to try to cut the dose in half, but I'm even weary of doing that. I'm curious to see how any of you do with this drug. Guest guest
Laurie, I know exactly what you mean. They had me on an antidepressant a few years ago. I gained 40 pounds in record time. They took me off and switched me. I have not been able to lose the extra 40+ pounds now. All these years later and I am having the doc wean me off so that I can get back to a healthy weight. I am only 5'2 " . What meds are you taking and I can tell you if that was the one that did it to me. The doc said that there is a very few people that gain an excessive amount of weight. Guest guest
I am horrified you have no idea what a shock 142lbs is to me.I went to 2 different family members houses to weigh myself because I knew the scales must be way off. I was 127 and heavy 2 months ago at my drs visit. And I complained that I was 127 and he says well 127 isnt bad considering you were 80lbs after your mother died.I called him and sent a message to tell him I weighed 142 he called back and I go in tomorrow morning hes knows I am horrified. My Aunt was horrified and so were my cousins and they thought it was funny. I think hes going to go with lexapro because he says I need the meds.I say stop them he says no it will come back and I will stop sleeping and worry all the time again..My doc also has GAD so he knows.I look like a duck if you put feathers on my butt youd be sure I was a duck. I will ask about wellbutin I have heard of that.I do some internet searching and see what I can find out too. Thanks Laurie Re: 142lbs Fortunately, on wellbutrin I have been very slowly getting rid of weight gained (a lot) on other med. Guest guest
Thought I would chime in on this subject. I have been on Paxil since the end of 2000. I was put on it because I was taking care of my dad who was going downhill due to Alzheimer's and Tori who wasn't a year old yet. I have been taking 30 mg. up until a few weeks back when Tori had some massive meltdowns on a day off from school and I could feel myself starting to lose it. Fortunately, I haven't had an increase of weight from it. However, I was on the DEPO shot since her birth and boy has that put on the pounds. I think I have gained 50 lbs. since then. I came off it in Feb. because it was killing my joints. Liz 142lbs Well theanti anxiety medicine the doc has me on is making me more anxious then ever I just weighed myself and weigh 142lbs. Guest guest
I'm on Wellbutrin myself. I'm on it because I have Adult ADD and I haven't noticed any sort of weight gain, although I seem to either lose a few pounds or stay the same weight. I'm almost 5' 7 " and 165 myself. I'd like to be 30 pounds lighter. Judi Re: 142lbs > > > Fortunately, on wellbutrin I have been very slowly getting rid of weight gained (a lot) on other med. Guest guest
Laurie ~ I know too. I gained 60+ pounds on an antidepressant in about 2 years and then stayed there for about 2 more years. I have lost 50 of them within the last year, after I quit taking the meds last November. They claimed it wasn't the meds though, I disagree. BUT, I will say that I needed the meds in order to get through the low time in my life I was going through, and if I needed them again to help me cope I would go on them again. Hang in there! Guest guest
<<Sherry, Did you have any side effects when you first started??? Also, how many milligrams are you taking? Patty>> No, but I've been on antidepressants for 20 years and I just switched from another one to lexapro a couple of years ago. When I first began on them it took about 2 weeks to get thru the crappy part. Everybody's so different too. They affect us all so differently. I thought I was gonna die on Paxil (especially trying to get off it) but others I know do fine on it. We're just like our kids I guess:-) Sherry Oh yeah, I'm on 30 mg. scary huh? If I had as much trouble as you describe on that small a dose I'd ask to try something else.
Guest guest
Depressed? Well what do any of us have to be depressed about?Lets see most of our kids can't talk, but do scream. Can walk but choose stop, drop, & flop instead. Can ask for almost anything with but, the potty picture and they choose to smear it like play do everywhere.Ya know I just do not understand what we have to be depressed about. And people also say things like, things could be worse put yourself in someone else's shoes. When I cleaning poop out of the carpet that's smeared everywhere I just can't think of anything that could be worse.LOL Cyndi > In a message dated 11/9/2006 8:11:19 P.M. Guest guest
Patty I know you have to wait out at least 3 weeks of feeling yucky before the meds start to work I have been on several of them. This one Im on is the best but it took 3 weeks of you know what until I felt better. It has been nice I take my pill and 20 minutes later I am asleep. I dont sleep I worry without the meds and it got so I couldnt function from lack of sleep. Some of these drugs make me feel like I have the creeps all the time this one didnt but I have gained so much weight.I went from a size 0 to a size 10 in less then a year.Ill go with whatever my doc reccomends I will be seeing him in a few hours.I do know alot of parents with disabled kids are taking some kind of meds.I tried for a year yo go without them until I started breaking out in hives for months on end and this drug stopped them. I cannot handle this extra weight.I am not sad or depressed its anxiety thats my dx General Anxiety Disorder.Millions of Americans have this I have done my homework on this subject. Hope this helps. If you are having nightmares and feel like youve got the creeps all the time you are on the wrong drug and my doc its trial and error with them. Laurie Re: 142lbs Wow! But looking and feeling healthy means more. Exercise is CRUCIAL. It generates oxygen to the brain, so it's a natural high. Even with this crazy cafe I am now running, I am FIERCE about getting my 4+ mile walk in every day. I just get up early and do it. I know it sounds silly, and it IS hard to do (believe me, when it's dark and cold outside, the LAST thing I feel like doing is dragging myself out of bed), but as I told Duff, I have never ever regretted a walk. So when the alarm goes off and the bed is toasty, I remind myself of that fact every time. I have never taken an andidepressant either....but my sister's been on them for years. She was in a very bad place a long time ago, and is terrified of stopping them. However, *I* feel if she would stop the damn cigarettes, and eat REAL food instead of junk, she wouldn't need the meds. I fought the doc for 2 years before I agreed to take antidepressants. In some cases it is just hereditary (we have a really murky genepool LOL) and the guilt one feels from relatives and friends who hint that they are really not needed is really painful. Not that you would do that but just so you know. The smoking and junk food did help but not completely. It can't be easy suffering from depression and having a sister who bakes madelaines and other delicacies:-). I doubt I could resist after the reports I've heard on the list.
