She doesn't do it quite as much now...mostly only when she is hurting or something is bothering her but for YEARS that sound has driven me nuts. Other people seem to be able to tune it out (because they don't have to hear it 24/7) but it just grates on my nerves like fingernails on a chalkboard. We call it moaning or groaning or whatever but it is definitely an AAAAAHHHHHHH. As we have gradually sorted out her medical and sensory problems it has definitely decreased. LOL---she just let out a long AAAAHHHHH just now! Welcome to the group and a very special club:-) Sherry
Guest guest
Hi Jessi, Sounds like he may have some oral motor sensory issues. He is feeling the vibration on his hand and it's calming to him. My son used to enjoy my massaging his cheeks really fast. It was so calming to him he would almost fall asleep. Have you read the Out of Sinc Child? It may help you understand more. Charlyne Mom to Zeb 13 DS/OCD/ASD? Jessi wrote: I wanted to say Thank You to everyone who responded to my message. I really appreciate all the support. It is very comforting to hear the same story as mine. Thank you so much. You are all so kind. And I will be asking more questions. I do have one though now: Did or does any of your kids make noises? Danial makes noises all time. It is like a AAAAHHHHH sound, most of the time his hand is in his mouth. There is nothing we can do to stop him from doing it. It really does not matter the situation. Sometimes he does it all day. Some days I can tune it out, but other days it drives me nuts. Guest guest
Jessi: I know alot of kids with autism make " strange " noises. For a while, Tori was growling. Guest guest
Noises or sounds are part and parcel with my son. He picks a sound (not always the same one) and then " Echos " - sometimes for hours - other times he picks his spot - like in the middle of a restaurant or in a meeting or in the middle of religious services. As you say - some times you can tune it out. Some days his teacher writes that it has been a " challenging Day " because he tunes her out with his sound de jour. However, sometimes we can redirect with a favored activity - nothing like rewarding behavior we don't want by giving him something that he does want. The reverse doesn't work - we cannot threaten to remove a favored activity if he doesn't stop. So I believe that the motivaator must be something stronger than the motivation to continue the noise. Very unscientific!! Sara - Choose to make lemonade, not complain about the lemons. > >Reply-To: >To: >Subject: Thank You!!! Guest guest
That is funny that you mention " fingers on a chalkboard " because Danial's teacher says that is what it is like for her. I feel sorry for her when he has one of his noisy days. Jessi > > <<Did or does any of your kids make noises? Danial makes noises all > time. Guest guest
I completly understand when you say he picks his spots. It never ever fails, as soon as we get into a place where he needs to be quiet or semi quiet he starts making his noise. I have had to leave many places or hurry up. Forget going to the library with him anymore. Jessi > > Noises or sounds are part and parcel with my son. Guest guest
Yup - when Elie was three, I was in London with him - went to the British Museum with him - lugged that stroller up all the D.... stairs!!! Got to the Egyptian Room - no one there but mummies. Elie started " echoing " - a guard came and told us to leave - we " dostrubed the ambiance " .!!! So much for culture in MY life.
