I can tell you what worked for Trisha though. At school they were making a big issue of the shoes being kept on. The more they stressed it the worse she got. Anyway, I asked them what was so critical that she " had " to have her shoes on all the time. It was more of a control thing for them than a real issue about the shoes. So what they did was stop making a big issue of the shoes and each time she took them off they would just remind her " shoes on " and it was her job to put them back on with as little help as possible. If she didn't put them back on that was ok except she didn't get to go outside or other places out of the room until she put her shoes on. It didn't take very long for her to start leaving her shoes on. She also takes them off in the car when we are going places and we pretty much do the same thing, put your shoes on and now she can do that herself so she gets reminded to put them on. She hasn't taken her shoes off at school for over a year now and she only occasionally takes her shoes off in the car and that is usually when we have been on the road for long periods at a time. Guest guest
i agree i think haveing hightops is just another things for mic to have prblems with.they are not only hard to get off but hard to get on unless you practically unlace them. The school cant make him wear hightops. use to take his shoes off persistently at school and they put special rugs under his table etc for his feet and he would get some sensory issues resolved. make a goal in his iep or behaviorplan about it, make a social story only take his shoes off at home or doing sensory work etc. The consistency and persistence payed off nathan hasnt removed his shoes at school in years, and still does as soon as he comes in the door at home as the rest of us do. shawna
Guest guest
oh yes i remember that, nathan use to ALWAYS take his shoes off in the car too, i loved those no tie shoes strins they had back then now they have the slip on sketchers and nathan learned in order to get out of the car or go outside etc to put his shoes on, and not having to tie made this an attainable goal for him. as for the right feet, i put a smiley face on the inner curve of each shoe (somewhere betweeen the big toe and ankle) where they touch when you put your shoes together when wearing them, and i would ask nathan can they kiss? and he would put them together and make a kiss noise and go " yep " and get lots of cheers, he loved this, we did that for a handful of years, not anymore he can tell which foot the shoe goes on. hope this helps shawna
Guest guest
Laurie, Here is my input on this. This should be part of the behavioral plan as one of the goals to be addressed now. Anyone working with a person with autism and applies ABA therapy and some sensory integration therapy should be aware of the importance of generalization. When Mic is at home, this is his comfort zone and when he is at school this is where the break down skills of working around the " taking off shoe " task must be worked around by accomodating with social scripts around his level, even a video modeling script could be implemented into his classroom routine, the OT desentizing him to where he finds a comfort of when to wear his shoes, even if it takes a timer with the break down skills of some ABA strategies. What are they teaching Mic, should you take the other route of searching for some high tops? This will be extra expense, time consuming finding the right pair of shoes, and the most unpredictable of all, changes. Just wanted to share this in the mean time. I'll get back, heading out with a friend for lunch and then take out for his private ST & OT session. Guest guest
Laurie, I agree with who ever said, make it a part of his behavior plan. Jake also took off his shoes all last year. Guess what, this year, no shoe problem. What they did was just not make it a struggle. He had to have his shoes on at certain times of the day. Eating, outside play, gym, etc. Eventually, he stopped taking them off. We did use hiking boots at some point, but just watch out if Mic is a kicker! Those hurt! ha! I would stick with the shoes he has and work on taking shoes on, and putting them on. Maybe also, you could try having times at home where he has to have his shoes on. Here is PA, everyone seems to take they shoes off in houses. I grew up in Texas. I hardly ever took my shoes off. Hot cement and bare feet are not something people like! Holly Shoes ??? Guest guest
Hi Laurie, I purchased high top Converse sneakers for my son, , through www.zappos.com. They are a huge online shoe store and fairly priced. Kids Footlocker also has them, in case you have one in your area. wears SMO orthotics and the high top Converse were the only shoes that would slip over them. Good luck!! Guest guest
Remember us all talking about the green Astroturf type door mats? They are available at Wal-Mart for like 7 dollars. I had one at home but them took it to Jake's classroom. They all use this and love it. Jake takes his shoes off and he can rub his feet on the turf. Lots of stimulation. Also, he likes sitting on it in circle time and rubbing his hands on it. I even thought I might have them cut a piece and Velcro it to his desk so he can rub his hands on it when he is trying to hold it together in his desk. Guest guest
Elie wears above the ankle Orthotics. He wears indoor soccer flats - they go on very easily over the orthotics. Shoes in school is the rule at our house. He may go shoeless at home and immediately goes to his room after school to get out of school clothes into very loose very soft " house clothes " - no shoes no underwear. AHHHHH the relief of it. Consistancy I think is the rule. But the school needs to be sure what the issue is. Obedience, safety, whatever. One year we did put hiking boots on Elie in the winter (cold in PA!!) but after he kicked an aide, we went back to soft shoes. in many countries, kids wear very soft (slippers) shoes inside the classroom for cleaniliness and safety. Maybe that would work for school??? Guest guest
Laurie- Perhaps it's not really your fault Mic takes his shoes and socks off. DJ likes to take his shoes and socks off, too. He had to have AFO's (ankle-foot-orthotics) for years until this past year. He always had high top lace up shoes to go over the AFO's. Recently he has learned to put on velcro type tennis shoes but the teacher asked last week that we return to the high top lace up shoes because he takes them off in class and throws them He only throws when he is not being engaged in an activity or is asking for attention, but they don't recognize that yet. I get high top lace up tennis shoes at our local Payless Shoe Source but I don't know if you have those where you live. Guest guest
Laurie, We had the same problem with Seth. I bought him Converse high tops because they were very lightweight. He eventually left them on all day and we switched to regular sneakers a couple years ago. They still come off the minute he gets in the door from school, but he does leave them on while at school. Now his little converse sneakers are used for dangling . Guest guest
Tori is a big non-shoe/sock wearer. The minute she comes in the house, they are off! I had the same issues with her keeping them on for the longest times. I would get them on to leave the house, and off they were in seconds. I'd get them back on and into the car and off they went again! I started buying hi-top everything's and these worked well; however she used to explode because she couldn't get them off. It took us a while to teach her she needed them on when she was out but she has finally gotten the drift. They still come off as soon as she gets home. Liz Re: Re: Shoes ??? Guest guest
Hi Laurie, Zeb always had issues with shoes. I remember buying him black converse high tops when he was 2. It was the only pair of shoes he couldn't get off. I never found them again once he outgrew them. I also remember driving him to preschool barefoot after getting knocked on the head with flying shoes and scouting my car for the socks in the school parking lot. Zeb is in the 8th grade now and yesterday he chose to wear his sandals to school. The school had an issue with him taking them off yesterday. I don't think the shoe issue with ever go away for Zeb. He says his shoes are comfortable but he just likes to go barefoot whenever he can get away with it. He still has trouble putting his shoes back on. The Converse are back on the market but they do not come in extra wides sizes. My younger grandchildren also do not keep their shoes on.
