OC and low milk supply

Hi from Portland, Oregon, U.S! I am a lactation consultant working with my first mama who had obstetric cholestasis during her pregnancy. Her naturally-induced birth went very well, she is well and her babe is well. However, she seems to have low milk supply. I wondered if you knew of any connections between OC and subsequent low milk supply. I know that estrogen and progesterone play an important role in preparing the breast for lactation, etc. I wonder if it's possible for a mother who might respond to those hormones with liver issues to also have an unusual (lack of) response in the breast tissue as well. She had a lower than normal amount of mammary gland tissue in her breasts.I would also imagine that a liver that is not

functioning well may effect milk supply as well but I don't know of any research exploring this.I would love to hear what you think about this. I would also appreciate your forwarding this message to anyone you think would know the answer or be interested.Yours warmly,Adrienne Fuson, IBCLC, RLC, CDBeyond Birth Lactation ServicesPortland, OR
