Guest guest
Sylvia: Would you ask him how important individual therapy is for children with Aspergers and BP? And what kind of therapist should I be looking for. Right now my son goes to one, but I always leave with the feeling it's for nothing. That nothing is being accomplished. What should the therapist be doing or working on? Guest guest
Hi. I would also like to know the answer to these questions. Skylar just turned 9, ia Asperger,ADHD along with OCD and ODD (which can go along with the Aspergers)and often leave the psychologist office either wondering what was accomplished or what did I miss in the conversation. Skylar only likes to go there to play with the toys or to play chess or basketball in the phys ed gym. I end up doing all the talking. I know Tony Atwood recommends 'Cognitive Behavioral Therapy', knowing this I would like the specifics of what people might expect, how often to go, how many months,years...My son,9 at the time and I went for 9 months. At the time he was in bad shape mentally so going helped. However, it drove both of us nuts after awhile and 'seemed' to be going no where. Looking back, I think it is a very slow process and possibly we should have continued but not as often. But then I am not sure that once a month would amount to anything. Personally, I am thinking that small groups such as boy/girl scouts, 4-H etc. provide therapy. I think we go into the therapy deal thinking after nine months or so we should see a difference. I think it is a very slow, long process and no one tells you this. I do know you can't just go when the child is mentally very unstable, because at that time, the child is too sick for the therapist to be able to work with. I like Winners www.socialthinking.com work in Calif. But the reality of finding someone like her and who pays is slim. I do think purchasing one of her books is worth it for parents to read. That's my take on all of this and I would also like to know what he has to say...Gail
