NEW JERSEY AND WASHINGTON STATE PUSH BACK

Parents, professionals, and advocates from New Jersey and Washington traveled to their state capitals this week to testify in support of parental vaccination rights. Both bills were held without a vote.

In New Jersey, after more than one hour of passionate testimony in support of the conscientious exemption to mandatory immunization, Assembly Health Committee chairman Herb Conaway called the bill a "recipe for disaster" and refused to allow a vote. Twenty states (over 50% of all Americans) and dozens of developed countries offer a philosophical exemption to vaccination mandates and do not compel vaccination.

In response to 2009 government data demonstrating that parents in states with the philosophical exemption actually vaccinate more, Chairman Conaway, who has singlehandedly blocked this bill from being heard for seven years, failed to explain why these states have not encountered the disaster he claims will follow in the Garden State. Chairman Conaway abitrarily limited individual testimony to 90 seconds and shut speakers down mid-sentence, pounding his gavel and saying "I am the Chairman" in response to appeals to be

permitted to finish a thought.

Deborah Ginsburg, M.D. spent the entire morning waiting to offer her testimony in support of parental vaccination choice. She explained that this bill is pro-vaccine and will result in higher vaccination coverage among children whose parents are deeply concerned about vaccine safety. In most states, concerned parents who send their children to public school are required to choose "all or none." Faced with this draconian option, Dr. Ginsburg explained that parents increasingly will choose "none." NJ mandates 45 doses of 13 vaccines for day care and school, more than any other state in the country. She, too, was silenced after 90 seconds. Chairman Conaway refused to allow Committee members to ask her questions.

From New Jersey News Room: Habakus, a leader of the New Jersey Coalition for Vaccination Choice, said she thought Conaway, who refused to hold a vote, could have been more "gracious" given the emotional nature of the debate. "This is not over," Habakus told NJ.com.
