Overeating can be a calming thing, giving you pleasure as well as

sensory input for the mouth. It goes from being about tasting the

food, to being about the feel of having something in your mouth, that

you swollow.

The more you eat the calmer you are, It's a mindless activity that

helps calm the person doing it.

The root of eating disorders, such as Bulimia or binging, is not always weight loss, but a sense of control. When stress becomes overwhelming, food is a form of control over chaos. This is also the case with an obsessive/compulsive who keeps their house immaculate, washes their hands 200 times a day, or eats until the calming endorphins are released when the sense of fullness arrives. My son's hand flapping is a coping mechanism for stress and I am sure it brings release just like overeating. If you suspect there is overeating and a possible eating disorder, get help now! I recommend a book called "Bulimia: A guide for Family and Friends". It outlines many behavioral and psychological signs of when overeating can become a disorder.
