Guest guest
I am trying to catch my 10 year old up in reading and math. His school (public-typical 4th grade he will be entering in september) refused to teach him phonological awareness in his first grade, second grade, and repeated second grade. it wasn't until that repeated second grade that I had to become aware of how pathetic our school system curriculum (or should I say lack there of). Up to that point his teachers were exceptional and his progress reflected the teachers effort. his repeated second grade teacher only taught math 3 days of the 5 day week of school, she had absolutely no idea how to teach grammar or phonics. But boy could she teach those kids all about american indians: how to build a tee pee, an indian drum, and indian hats. after a successful 3rd grade teacher and finger-in-your-face approach to telling the school YOU WILL TEACH HIM THE WILSON TECHNIQUE for reading, my son has gone from 29 words per minute in october 2009 to 59 words per minute in May 2010. I finally proved that my son was not uneducatable. I heard of the intensive program and the incredible results of mood bell, I want to get him set up for next summer so we can brige the gap between him and his peers. unfortunately this school system does not understand Autism does not equal mental retardation. any thoughts or feedback welcome.
