ASPEN's Annual fall conference on AS/PDD-NOS/HFA is on Sunday, October

3rd at the JFK Conference Center in Edison, NJ . Cost-Members $55

(preregistered) and Non-members $75 (preregistered). Deadline for

preregistration (at this lower rate) is 9/24/99.

Our speaker is Dr. Ami Klin of the Yale Child Study Center who will be

presenting " Beyond the Diagnosis: Guidelines for Intervention. " The day

will include an overview of clinical issues and assessment principals; an

overview of guidelines for intervention; social, communication, and

organizational skills training; and home, environment, vocational, and

independent living issues.

Mae Francois and Hoffman, adults on the high functioning end of

the autism spectrum, will then give us their personal perspectives on

growing up and living with an autism spectrum disorder.

Dr. Temple Grandin - The Autism Continuum Perhaps one of the most noted

high-functioning individuals with autism in the world, Dr. Grandin will

offer a unique look at the autism spectrum. Talking about her life, from

childhood to adulthood, Temple's comments are vivid and candid. Topics

include early intervention, educational strategies, social skill

development, visual thinking, the use of medications and more in this highly

educational and personal look at autism.

Carol Gray - Social Stories Carol is a dynamic speaker, author and a

consultant for 60 students, ages 2-26, with disorders across the autism

spectrum. Her popular books Original Social Stories, New Social Stories,

Comic Strip Conversation, Taming the Recess Jungle, and What's Next? have

helped thousands of individuals, children and adults alike, develop one of

the defining characteristics of autistic spectrum disorder...social

understanding and skills. Through the use of demonstration, visual aids, and

audience participation, Carol Gray will discuss social stories, and

instructional technique she initiated and developed to teach social

understanding and social skills.

Eustacia Cutler (Not Confirmed) - Temple Grandin's Mother Speaks Out

Ms. Cutler will address Temple's childhood and the challenges that she

faced. Accused of " over-reacting " , Eustacia proceeded on her own to where

the doctors declared she had done a job that put the entire staff of The

Children's Hospital to shame. " It is as rare as if Temple recovered

spontaneously from leukemia. " A graduate of Harvard University, with TV

documentaries on retarded and emotionally disquieted children to her credit,

Ms. Cutler will also explore the effect of autism on the identity of

siblings and parents.

Barbara Hanft MA, OTR, FAOTA- Recognizing Sensory Integration Problems

in Children with Autism This session provides an introduction to sensory

integration disorders and focuses on recognizing the resulting behavior

problems of children with autism at home and school.

Dorinne S. MA, CCC-A - Sound Based Therapies and Auditory

Processing Thirty years experience in educational & rehabilitative audiology

provides the foundation for this unique focus. Ms. is the only

audiologist in the U.S. certified in the variety of specialized sound based

therapies including Auditory Integration Training, The Tomatis Method,

Samonas, BioAcoustics Earobics and Fast ForWord. She will discuss how " Sound

Based " therapies address the symptoms that relate to Autism/PDD, ADD, ADHD,

Dyslexia, and other Auditory Processing Disorders.

Dr. E. Folstein, M.D. - Genetic Linkage Studies of Autism Dr.

Folstein will discuss the Collaborative Autism Project (CAP) and their

attempt to answer basic questions about the genetics and neurobiology of

autism.
