Hi ,

You really need to try and work out what is causing to get into

these tempers. Perhaps he is struggling to communicate? Even those who seem

very competent verbally have real trouble with receptive language (they

wouldn't be dx'd autistic otherwise!). I know that using PECS (picture

exchange communication system) can be helpful, or any method of

communicating visually. Some people make a daily picture timetable board,

using velcro, so that their child can see what should happen next - but

using the velcro means it can be changed easily, and extra things inserted

if necessary. When each activity is over, the picture is removed.

Try using social stories too, to explain things to him.

They benefit greatly from having a lot of structure around them, but it is

not always possible to achieve the amount they require!

Another suggestion is to find a safe way for him to let his anger out -

maybe a punch bag. One person I know keeps newspapers for her son to rip up.

My 7 1/2 year old is on Clonidine for anxiety and behavioral issues. He was taking 1/2 pill for awhile, but I upped it to a whole pill as of lately cause he's just gotten out of control at times. Mostly on the weekends and I try to wait until close to bedtime to give it to him cause his knocks his butt out cold!
