Guest guest
Ladies, I just reviewed the FAQs page from the SKYPE Lactation company being discussed and I am concerned about many of the claims; one being that " Mothers who have stopped breastfeeding their baby prematurely will be able to bring back a full milk supply. " I am aware of many mothers who have diligently tried to increase their milk supply to no avail (with active breastpumping/skin-to-skin/galactogogues/meds) after a moderate to severe case of engorgement or have fed mostly/all formula for the 1st 2-3 weeks, or did not establish any baby to breast contact for the 1st month or so. Just getting to a partial milk supply would have satisfied their goals.....but a promise of a full supply? I believe that we as IBCLCs should give the moms encouragement to try the different plans of care for their special situation but not all breast tissue will perform a miraculous turn-around. I would like to think there are blessed care plans that fit all situations with full supply results... but I am skeptical.
Guest guest
I'm totally offended by their claims, again I myself am a lactation consultant who has struggled with a persistant low milk supply. I emailed those lactation consultants (who seem way more like car salesmen than lactation consultants) with my concerns. I'd love it if they are aliens from another planet who have some enlightened and magical power to bring a full supply to a chronic low milk supply situation... but I doubt it. If they are indeed just making empty claims (which is what it seems like) they should be reported to IBCLE. If I was a mom, read their site, tried them and was one of the chronic low milk supply moms not able to acheive a 100% exclusive BF supply, I'd be so frustrated with Lactation Consultants altogether, I'd start hating the profession. Those 2 are a potential threat to us all as ethical, caring professionals, if that is, their claims are empty -and how could they not be? > > Ladies, > > I just reviewed the FAQs page from the SKYPE Lactation company being > discussed and I am concerned about many of the claims; one being that > " Mothers who have stopped breastfeeding their baby prematurely will be able > to bring back a full milk supply. Guest guest
I am curious why there are no names? I would be little cautious about any company -especially one with such high claims- that doesn't disclose their workforce... Guest guest
How about letting Liz in on this and get her take as to what could be done in terms of sanctions legally? Barbara Latterner
Guest guest
I second Barbara's suggestion to consult with Liz . It seems like there is more than one possible violation and we would want to be on solid ground. normaNorma Ritter, IBCLC, RLCBreastfeeding Matters in the Capital Region www.NormaRitter.comJoin us on Facebook for the latest birthing and breastfeeding news and views:http://tinyurl.com/BMCRonFB Â How about letting Liz in on this and get her take as to what could be done in terms of sanctions legally? Guest guest
Liz is an IBCLC, a lawyer, and secretary for ILCA. She occasionally posts on Lactnet and I took an ethics session from her at a conference and she was terrific. Barbara Latterner

Guest guest
I have been communicating with Laurie. She has since changed some of the things on that webpage, yet references to the changes as though that's the way it was written all along. Now the website states that for women inducing lactation, exclusive breastfeeding is " possible " , and a few other minor word changes I believe. Very careful wording... also she stressed to me that IBCLC's must express their " CONFIDENCE " in women's ability to exclusively breastfeed. Whatever. Of course we express our confidence, but I think that should be done without lying. Anyway I am satisfied that she has a great marketing director and is not too interested in having a truly open dialogue about the misleading/false advertising. In the end, what I can do is be a good IBCLC myself and not partake in false advertising in my own practice. *I do think it would be greatly beneficial if more of you contacted her.*
Guest guest
Way to go ! And thanks for sharing. this situation and another that I posted about that was the opposite "your twins are too old to breastfeed" got me fired up. I have started an article for my blog about "red flag" phrases that moms may hear. (such as All moms can exc. breastfeed) I hope it will be helpful information for parents seeking help.BTW--both of the 3 mo old twins breastfed today. latched w/o pain to mom and transferred milk. I was impressed with them given that one is tongue-tied and has torticollis and mom's milk supply is horribly low. It just proves once again that babies are born to breastfeed!
