Guest guest
Xerxes entered full day regular Kindergarten at the age of 5½. We had just moved to Homewood, Alabama and he did not understand a word of English (not ASL either). We had some cultural confrontations as parents, but Xerxes loved and developed more than anyone who knew him before could even imagine and in so many areas. He had pull-outs twice a week for speech. We only stayed one semester and then went back to Sweden and day care (cause he was to young to go to school here :-) ). I am nearly finished with a book about our experience. Now he is 8 years old and in regular first grade (he is born January 1999 so he is in first grade the all the other kids born 1999). It is great and we can se how well this works for him. But it's not half a smooth as it was in Alabama. Just the other week the minister of education in Sweden made a statement that inclusion only sounds good, but can never work in real life. :-( Well we know inclusion is the track for Xerxes and we are prepared to fight for it.
