Guest guest
Will your therapist make home visits? Some will although there is usually an extra charge. You could also try offering some desired reward for cooperation in going to therapy. I know it's tough. > > Subject: update on 10 yod > To: > Date: Monday, July 27, 2009, 12:43 PM > My 10 yod had been unable to go out > anywhere for the past few weeks. Guest guest
YAY, amazing how much medication can help. That's great she got out those 2 days! Baby steps, I guess, in getting her to the, apparently, harder places for her to go. You're probably right about not wanting to face the obsessions; maybe push her a little bit to get to therapist after she's had more success at getting out and doing okay, even if it's just getting to the office to say " hi! " and report she's doing better at getting out. > > My 10 yod had been unable to go out anywhere for the past few weeks. The Dr. doubled her dose of Buspar from 5mg to 10mg. Guest guest
That's great that your daughter was able to go out - progress!!!! If there are triggers for her at church, this may be the block on this. Likewise the therapy, it brings them square into everything, so most do want to avoid it. I wonder if you had a big enough incentive initially to encourage her to go? If the medication is reducing the anxiety, then she will be more able to just do it, but will likely still hold onto fear and resistance. It's always the anticipation that is the worst. Once they are there it is usually fine. Now mind you with the therapy, it depends what is being done, and her experience of it will influence her willingness to return. Has she been yet? If not, does she know that she does not have to share the content of her obsessions with the therapist to be helped? This was a big concern for our son, and it helped him to know this. If you pitch it to her that the doctor has tools that he/she can teach her so that she can learn to manage the OCD, so that it will stop ruling her life. Just thinking if you can get to the core of what is getting in the way of her going, you many be able to reduce some of her fears/concerns around this. Sorry if you have already explained some of this, I may have missed previous posts. Best on things continuing to improve with the increase in medication. Guest guest
She has seen Holly, her therapist on and off for 6 years. The past 2 years she has been reluctent to go see her. She loves her though, that is why I figure she must not want to face her fears and all. Holly is great with her and doesn't push her too much at all. She is planning on coming to the house to see her. I am going tomorrow to talk to her to get a game plan together. For some reason church has always been an issue with her. It has caused her anxiety for awhile now. She will be okay for awhile and then not for awhile. Winter of 08 she missed 6 weeks, not she has missed around 5 or so. We haven't done school since April. I miss it, but of course she doesn't. I am getting geared up to start, but I don't know what if any we will be able to do come end of Aug. or beg of Sept. I am wondering how much she has forgotten and how much we will have review. SHe is so behind on everything. Her reading level is way behind. The OCD keeps her from learning and her full potential. When she says she is bored I mention she could do some writing or math and she says it is summer I don't have to do school. I wish she liked to learn. I try to make it fun and don't require too much out of her. We do it in short spurts and all, but nothing seems to work. She just gets too frustrated and wants her work to be perfect and if she messes up or doesn't get something she gets mad and quits. Nothing I do seems to help. While you are encouraging her to return to her therapist, you could help her learn skills to manage her worry in the " Outsmart Your Worry Tool Kit For Kids " She will think she is playing, but she will really be learning important ERP strategies in a fun and effective way. The kits are parent-child interactive and give parents the actual words to help their children manage the anxiety they feel when they confront OCD and say " No " to obsessions and compulsions. Visit the website @ www.toolkitsforkids.com. The Elementary School Edition would be the most appropriate for a 10 year-old. >
Guest guest
Well, I hope that the visit from the therapist is helpful. Great that she will come to your house! The OCD does wax and wane, and can creap up and snowball quickly, sometimes no rhyme or reason. The school thing I can relate to, ours lost most of two years. If the OCD attacks the learning process in any way, it can be a huge challenge for them. Ours would have to read and reread, his brain would tell him he did not understand. He only just started reading a novel for the first time ever in his life, at 17. It was just to exhausting, understandably, he also has LD stuff that add to this challenge. The perfectionist stuff is hard. So much frustration and limitations. We had this too. Hard to watch and as you say nothing you do generally helps. They have to learn to tolerate the " not perfect " . It's hard to know what they can manage sometimes. If she has been out of school since April, I'm sure there will be anxiety around going back. Just have to work your way through it. The anticipation is always the hardest. Do you think she is well enough to manage this, or not sure? Hope the therapist can help this along. Best to you on all this! Warmly, Barb > > She has seen Holly, her therapist on and off for 6 years. The past 2 years she has been reluctent to go see her.
