Bob had bought a camping stove and propane tubes and we used that for cooking. I'm not sure as to how many but there are still some without power here in and around Atchison. Our back yard looks a mess with all the tree limbs that fell. Some fell into the fence and bent it some. I did wonder about your Parents since it was hit harder up there and hope they have got power by now! Judy, 's MomGayla Palmero <wheresmyangelsgmail> wrote: Hey Judy, I see you all have power. I have to say for our school district they had a pretty good program for there were only a few times I really got upset about but things got taken care of. So yes I would definitely fight for speech and by law your child is entitled to it. Judy & Bob Parents to 28yrs. old the joy of our lives who happens to have ds and multiple disabilities and 35yrs. I am just at such a loss with that. Both my teenage daughters get speech at school and outside of school. It is the one therapy that to me has been the most beneficial to my children. My son, Gavin, is 6 and currently has the label of SLI, however he has a heart condition that qualifies him for OHI. In my district a parent was told her child didn't qualify for speech because his IQ was too low to justify it. They said his academic age and speech are equivalent. I am at the beginning of the fight, so I appreciate you sharing. I think as parents we need to see our children for all their possibilities – not probabilities. I also think if the education system spent half as much energy trying to help our children as they do fighting/assessing/labeling/meeting/judging the results would be astounding. Keep us up to date! I switched jobs this year so now I am teaching high school Earth science. What an experience. My twins are doing well is in 2nd grade, while her twin brother is in 1st grade. I held him from starting kindergarten on time so that we could spend the year really working on his speech. We had some issue with Kindergarten last year with at teach that really want him label MR instead of SLI that he had. We ended up going through eligibility again, his label was changed MR by the eligibility committee. Due to the fact that the school psychologist did not due evaluation correctly I disagreed with the eligility committee and was able to get the school district to pay for outside evaluation. The results were mixed, if Tyler is compared to kids his age he is significantly behind, however, if compared to grade level he is testing at a 1st grade level. With that knowledge, intervention(the little he gets, which is just resource help a couple days a week and speech for 60mins a week) is working. Thus it is very difficult for the county to keep his label at MR, it probably should be OHI at this point. Some may wonder why I do not agree with the label, that is in the county I live in the teacher generally do not push kids with an MR label, they really do not expect them to learn much and they spend more time trying to get the child moved to self contained classroom. So now I am waiting to see what the school eligiblity committee decides.
