Guest guest
Robin You are doing a good thing. More power to you! Congrats on your new family! Brigid Hello Hi everyone, Just joined the site and thought I would introduce myself. My name is Robin L. I gained custody of my nefew a little over 2 years ago. After several years of abuse from his mother has come a long way. When i first got him he was 7 yrs old and still taking a baby bottle. He spent most of the 7 yrs previous to me locked up in his bedroom, only weighed 36 lbs and would not walk 1 city block. does not speak... he signs. In the last 2 years he is eating with the rest of the family, going to car shows and walking the whole time. Trying to dress himself and bath himself. went from size 3 in clothes to size 6 and still growing well. He also went from about 30 signs to now over 200. I'm having some problem with him sleeping at night, hitting people, and big sensory issues. Any help will be greatly appreciated. I also failed to mention that this is my second time with 4 children. I have raised 3 step kids 1 natural child and now have gotten custody of ...9, his 2 sisters ...17 and ...15, and 1 grandson ...10. Thanks, Robin L Ohio

Guest guest
Hi and welcome. I had identicals with DS, but lost Jordan at 13 days old. I knew they both might have DS before they were born based on my AFP being 1:16 chance, but I declined the amnio. , my surviving preemie has been delayed with all of his milestones. He sat up at 26 mos, bunny hop crawled at 27 mos, and still does not walk or talk. He is also 100% tube fed because he can't swallow. BUT....he is so funny!!!!! He has a personality that makes up for his lack in other areas. This is a great group here. Welcome again. Oh, will be 4 in January!!!!! Guest guest
Hi Carolyn, Wish I could answer all of your questions. Others might chime in with the other answers. I'm not even sure when I signed up - maybe a year or so ago? (It's all a blur with 3 toddlers.) The members are all over the world and just an extraordinary group of folks. I would be so lost without their friendships, advise, and support. The families I'm thinking of that are local - some are with this listserve; some are not. Some of us are members of the DS Assn. of Northern Virginia and this group has all kinds of events, from Christmas parties to Spring picnics, the Buddy Walk, and Golf tournament, etc. There are a few others around here that are members of a local Loudoun County DS listserve, which just started and is interested in local school issues, and developing connections for playgroups and local support.
