Judy & Bob Parents to 28yrs the joy of our lives who happens to have ds and multiple disabilities and Re: Check-in Day!, 10/6/2008, 12:00 am Hello from New Hampshire!I am new to this group and this is my first post. I have been 'lurking' (as the moderator called it) for a week or two now and have loved reading about and 'meeting' all your families. It really is so refreshing to find out how many families have multiples with DS or have multiple children with DS. I think we're the only family in NH with such a family...so it's really nice to find out we're not alone! Thanks for letting me join!My husband and I have 3 sons. Our oldest, Malakai, will be 3 in six weeks and our twins, Ezekiel & Noah (DS) are 9 months old. Noah had a large AV Canal defect and had surgery at 4m old. He is doing so much better now! As I'm sure you've all experienced, it's been crazy the past few months and we are just now starting to feel a touch of calmness and normalcy (if there is such a thing) return to our lives. We are starting to get involved with a local DS playgroup and are learning more and more about having children with special needs. I am also learning so much through your posts and through some of your blogs. Thank you so much for sharing your lives!!Debbymom of Kai (almost 3), Zeze and Noah (DS) 9 months. Guest guest
and Judith - It must be such fun to watch your children participate in sporting events. I look forward to that time though I'm really enjoying the toddler years. Question: How old do the kids have to be to join in the Special Olympics fun? Also, did you have the x-rays of the upper spine done that, I'm told, are critical before beginning any sports? And, if so, at what age did you do them? My guys are VERY active at 3 1/2 yoa but we haven't had them b/c the MD says they won't sit still for the x-rays to be effective and telling OR we have to put them out (which I won't do). But, I'm a bit nervous when they get into rough housing and break dancing (LOL). xo maggie Olivia '01 & '05 (IDs w/ DS) Re: Check-in Day!, 10/6/2008, 12:00 am Hello from New Hampshire!I am new to this group and this is my first post. Guest guest
This was the regional Special Olympic Bowling and there were about 4 to each lane and they had 40 lanes. does ramp bowling. you wouldn't believe how many wheelchairs that were there yesterday, more than I ever remember in all the years we have gone. Next month will be the state one. For the most part I have always been the one that helps because for some reason the past few years there has been so many fewer volunteers. The first few years when we started going to the regional and when the state bowling was held at Ft. Riley, KS there were so many volunteers that Bob and I got to sit back and watch but then the volunteers started to fall and now it is really sad. Some teams have persons that need help and they are just left to the lanes for someone that doesn't know them to help them. It is frustrating for all when things are so un-organized although it turned out fine in the end and that is the main thing. Guest guest
Love the ramp bowling! We have it too. It is just awesome. Sometimes, DAvey will practice with the ramp, since that ball gets so heavy for him. This was the regional Special Olympic Bowling and there were about 4 to each lane and they had 40 lanes. does ramp bowling. you wouldn't believe how many wheelchairs that were there yesterday, more than I ever remember in all the years we have gone. Guest guest
Maggie,Special Olympics is age 8. We had to do the X-ray before school started. The technician was awesome, and allowed me to be in the room during the X-ray. and Judith - It must be such fun to watch your children participate in sporting events. Guest guest
Yes we had the x-rays done on before he did any of the Special Olympic events. In 's case they used to have Special Olympics events at different schools around the area when he attended the public school and this was when he was in grade school. He was in a self contained class room but all the kids in the school knew all the kids in the class. But as he got older someone decided that they shouldn't have the events because it was having the kids with special needs in a group and they should be with their peers. But they did have peers at the events because they had a lot of the regular ed kids from classes help. I really think it was just a way to do away with it myself. In 's case he did get to go with his regular class on field trips some but it wasn't the type of things that really could participate in or even enjoy, even though I enjoyed it because I always went with him. I was so glad that he has been able to enjoy the Special Olympic Bowling since he has been out of school and attends the day service program. happens to be one of the more less abled persons with ds and multiple disabilities but I would like to share with you that at the Bowling yesterday that Tony, a young man that had ds was helping with scores which are computer run. The lady that was helping him with scores also was helping with the bowlers and all she had to do for Tony to make sure the arrow was on the right name was to tap on the right or left side of the score machine or say the initials of the person that should be bowling and he was right on it. He was quite a character. So for the most of you whose children are young you can look forward to your child with ds to really do great as they get older. There are a lot more opportunities now than when was little. Judy 's MOM Re: Check-in Day!, 10/6/2008, 12:00 am Hello from New Hampshire!I am new to this group and this is my first post. Guest guest
One of the young men that we bowl with, has two jobs, owns a cute truck, drives himself, and loves his cell phone. I can only pray that my Davey gets to that level! He is such a role model for the other kids. Yes we had the x-rays done on before he did any of the Special Olympic events.
