I have several friends with kids with severe allergies (not just milk), and -- although it's definitely extra work -- there's not a lot that their children can't eat. And the good news about milk allergies is that apparently most kids outgrow them. Also, many stores cater to allergies (e.g., Trader Joe's, if there's one near you) -- including many health food stores -- so you can buy a lot of stuff ready-made. I googled "allergy-free recipes" and found a bunch of good sites; e.g., The Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Network (http://www.foodallergy.org/recipes.html). Apparently, you need to join to fully access the site, but there are featured recipes each month that are available to everyone. Plus it looks like you can purchase recipe books for various types of allergies. I found this milk/dairy-free recipe on the site (I'm

not sure I'd recommend a berry topping for toddlers, but the cupcakes would work with any topping/icing): Old Glory CupcakesM, E, P, S, N 1 cup sugar1/2 cup milk-free, soy-free margarine, softened3 T. applesauce, divided2 tsp. vanilla extract1 1/2 cups flour1 3/4 tsp. baking powder1/2 cup water Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line muffin tins with paper liners. Set aside. In medium bowl, beat sugar and margarine with electric mixer until well combined. Beat in 2 T. applesauce and vanilla extract. Beat in flour and baking powder. Stir in remaining applesauce. Stir in water until batter is smooth. Spoon into prepared muffin tins, 2/3 full. Bake 20 to 25 minutes, or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool completely before frosting with Berry Topping. Download the Recipe

Also, for more information on milk protein allergies, I found this (from http://www.allergysa.org/milk.htm): TABLE 2. Label

I do have a question for you all. Molly, at age 3 months, was diagonosed with a SEVERE milk protein allergy. She just turned one year today and her birthday party is on Sunday and I can not give her birthday cake??? I called the pediatrician to see if he had any ideas as to what or how I can make her cake without Milk products and he gave me some website that was nothing but discribing what a protein allergy is--no recipes. Is there anyone out there that can help me?? Essentially Molly gets fresh fruits and veggies and breast milk while her twin

Maggie gets to eat with the family each night. It makes me sad... Thanks for any advice that you have for me.Wife to Mike Ausitn (12)Gavin (4)Maggie and Molly--DS (12 months!!)Sheryl Knapp Literacy Advocates www.LiteracyAdvocates.com
