Hi from Iowa!

My husband and I are both orig. from Iowa and now live in Arlington, VA. We love it here, but I would love to move to I.C. or Des Moines.

We have triplets that are 9 and in 3rd grade. How is the support in Eastern Iowa and how are the schools? Full inclusion? I'm curious.

Thanks,

Kay

Hi . I grew up in Iowa, near Mason City and Fort Dodge. I now live in ton, SC. We recently got the MR/RD waiver too, and it has been a great help for getting us respite and behavior support. I'm thankful for the OT who encouraged us to sign up 3 years ago. It took that long to get through the waiting list.

Hi Kay!

We live 1/2 hour south of Iowa City! The support is very good in

Iowa, at this time (unless they make more cuts to programs).

is on the MR Waiver and gets respite, medicaid (which helps with

medical bills but also provides private speech), and supported

community living hours. At this point, gets worked with for 3

hours on Mondays to cook his own supper and take a shower. On

Tuesdays, he goes bowling and pays for his own french fries. On

Wednesdays, he goes to swimming lessons. Thursdays are his day off

and Fridays is a free day (i.e. go to the library). It's been great

to have the waiver.

As for support in the Eastern Iowa area, you are asking someone who

is going to be biased! My husband and I created the most active

support group - Hawkeye Area Down Syndrome Association. Our website

is wwww.hadsa.org if you ever want to get more info on services

around here.

Wow, triplets...I can't even imagine that!!
