Guest guest
Congratulations on the birth of your boys. My twins, Beckett and , were born at 34 weeks, and I had also been on bed rest after 25 weeks - so I empathize greatly with your wife's ordeal. My husband and I did NOT know during the pregnancy that anything was unusual about the boys. We knew they were fraternal. It was apparent right away that was not doing as well as Beckett and within a few hours, we were told they suspected DS. Needless to say, it's been 3+ years, and sometimes we still revisit those first few days in our heads. has had no other medical complications. He started walking at 20 months. He is still not using language, although he is a very loud young boy. He is also unusually tall for DS which has caused us some difficult with developmental issues. It's hard chasing after a boy who is in a 4-year old's body, but comprehending things at a 9-month old level. Yes, has not performed as well as other children his age with DS. His cognitive abilities seem to be much more affected. Although he is a happy and active little boy. Its been a tough pregnancy for my wife. Her membrane tore at 25 weeks and she started leaking fluid slowly. So she was put on bed rest at the hospital. She made it five weeks. Guest guest
My twin boys are named Will and Jake!!!!!! My Will has a simean crease on his left hand. We found out that he has DS the day after they were born at 34 5/7weeks. It was confirmed the next week. This is a great group who knows a lot about a lot. Congratulations on the birth of your boys. I know your Jake will love your Will as much as my Jake loves my Will!! It's unbelievable! Guest guest
Welcome to this list. Congratulations on the birth of your twin boys. We'll keep your family in our thoughts and prayers. Our girls, Gretchen (ds) and a will be 4 in November. Gretchen is very high functioning and is most significantly delayed in her expressive speech. She is slowly starting to gain more words and sounds. She began walking just before her 2nd birthday and has been running every since. She never misses anything that her siblings (or peers) are doing. In fact, Gretchen is now in her second year of taking ballet classes. We've been blessed that Gretchen has had no health issues, just a cardiac "watch" for her first year, and tubes inserted in her ears. When Gretchen sees kids on bikes, she jumps on hers. When she sees her siblings on rollerblades, she starts looking for hers so she can join in on the fun. So, while there are lots of developmental issues, she can do just about anything and will do just about anything given the opportunity. Keep thinking positive thoughts and you will get through each day. Take them one day at a time. Guest guest
Congratulations on your twins!! This is a wonderful group, look there is already a set of twins named Will & Jake, here you can ask any question , someone has already been through it and wants to help. We delivered our triplets after 36 weeks guessing everything was fine our first son Zachary has Ds, it was quite a shock and took awhile to sink in. They are now 7 in school and Zack tries very hard to keep up with his siblings. Will is very lucky to have Jake, he will be a full time therapist and he will push Will along w/o knowing it. Try to enjoy your boys it's hard when they are so tiny. There are alot of great resources, books, and websites, for you to investigate over time, just know you are not alone! Guest guest
Congratulations on the birth of your twin sons. My name is Caroline Mavridis and I am parent of 11 year old identical twin boys who both have Down Syndrome They will be turning 12 September 30. I adopted my sons when they were 9 months old and it was the best thing I have ever done. I know everything seems a bit hard for your family right now, but the best advice I can give is you have two beautiful boys who will bring you so much joy and some hardache like all kids do. Will has the best oppurtunities because he has a twin brother who he can watch and learn from. I found my life changed a lot when my sons arrived and the change was a really good thing for me. I look at life very differently now and a lot of times I look at life through my sons eyes. Congratulations again and enjoy your the new members of your family. Guest guest
Hi, Congratulations on your twin babies, Will & Jake! What handsome, strong names! It's great to meet you. This is a great group to stay connected with. We all definitely know what you're going thru. Personally, our twin girls, Haley & Nikki, both w/ DS, prematurity, open-heart surgery, adenoid/tonsil/ear surgeries, and tear duct surgeries this Thursday, turned 3 years old on Sept. 12. They girls are right on the edge of walking now. It's amazing how fast the time flies. Please keep in mind that every child w/ DS is different. As long as you have a great geneticist and/or pediatrician keeping their eye on the typical things you should watch for, ie, thyroid, celiac, heart, adenoids, etc., your baby will do great. Hang in there, keep following your intuition, take care of yourself and your wife, love your babies, and please ask all the questions you want. There's always someone here with a few words of wisdom and/or some great advice, willing to lend an ear, or even to say a prayer or two for you and your family. Regards, Granata Wife to Joe Mom to Haley & Nikki, 3 yr. twin girls, both w/DS, and , 17 mos son Leesburg, VA -----Original Message-----From: Multiples-DS [mailto:Multiples-DS ]On Behalf Of bfmersereauSent: Friday, September 23, 2005 2:59 PMTo: Multiples-DS Subject: New MemberOn Wednesday my wife and I learned that one of our twin boys has DS. Guest guest
Hi, welcome to a great group. My name is Amy and my husband and I have 1 year old twin girls, both with Ds. We did not know until they were born that they had Ds and we waited and hoped for 3 weeks (for test results) that the second didn't (she had no characteristics). When we got the tests back, it confirmed that they both had Ds. This was a shock needless to say, and also we were told all along that they were fraternal (they are identical - test results again!) I too was on bedrest in the hospital for 9 weeks and I delivered at 34 weeks. My son (3.5 yrs) was born at 31 weeks, so I can empathise with you. The NICU is a scary place at first and it is an emotional rollercoaster, but they are in great hands and in the best place for now. I remember the preemie issues (gavage feeding, IV " S....) and the diagnosis issues (shock, fear, anger, overwhelmed, confused, sad ....)so well. A year has gone by and I remember when people told me it gets easier and you do love these little babies sooo much, I was skeptical (being honest) However, they are sooooo right. Not a day goes by without me laughing at my girls. Yes, I have sad days once in a while, but they are fewer and fewer. I have learned so much because of my girls and the best advice I can give you is what everyone said to me (and already to you!): take it one day at a time, be there for each other (your wife and you) and LOVE those BABIES. Congratulations!!!! Hang in there and accept all the help and support you can get. Thinking of you and your family, Amy, mom to Blake 3.5 yrs., Carly and Calli, 1 yr. both w/Ds > On Wednesday my wife and I learned that one of our twin boys has DS. > Its been a tough pregnancy for my wife. His diagnosis came as a complete shock to us since we were pretty much assured he did not have DS. We would have him either way it just would have been nice not to be so completely blindsided by it. I think the best thing about our family is that is a little boy first, a sweet, loving, naughty little boy, our son, a twin, a brother, a grandson, nephew and so on, all these BEFORE he is someone with DS. Guest guest
This is the grandmother of Vaughan's kids in Virginia. I work as a CNM in Texas. Last week I delivered a baby with Down Syndrome for a 27 yo mom who had had a negative quadruple screen (that's the one with the Inhibin A ) plus two normal sonograms. When the baby arrived with DS, the mom was quite astonished and taken aback. Granted that she had no definitive testing, but it seems like a quadscreen and two sonograms would give a clue in most cases. Doctors are only human but with todays technology you would think there wouldn't be so many incorrect diagnosis. Congrats on the new baby!a Re: new member Hi a, Welcome and congrats on the twins turning 2 tomorrow. I love your kids names. I have 3 1/2 (DS) and Aidan (one month) who we were told also had DS but didn't end up to. Guest guest
I had a triple screen, 4 sonograms, and was 26 years old. We didn't find out until the twins were 2 weeks old that had DS. I had no definitive testing either. It was definately meant to be for Miss Brookie bear to be here! We're so lucky to have her in our lives. ~ mom to (DS) and Caden 10 months, 7 months corrected Re: new member Hi a, Welcome and congrats on the twins turning 2 tomorrow. I love your kids names.
