Guest guest
Hi All, Hello to the new folks! This is a great place to be. Haley, Nikki, & are all growing like weeds! The girls are starting to do more spontaneous 3-4 word utterances; their next big step in speech is articulation and of course mastering the ability to appropriate chew all types of foods before swallowing. The girls love to dance and really enjoy the signing time dvds. Looks like I will be home-schooling them this summer due to the lack of appropriate ESY services. I would like to help them with their kindergarten readiness skills, speech, chewing, reading, handwriting, independent potty skills, functional & cognitive skills, and pedaling trikes. So now I'm in the middle of setting up the house for a " classroom. " Our dining/kitchen now has a homemade monthly calendar and I add the next number each day; there's a kindergarten creed ( " Today - I will do more than I have to do; I will treat others as I want to be treated; And I will try to become a better person. " ) and the playroom is set up with a play kitchen/ dining room/living room/baby room/music area/ library area and I am designing an area with a large mirror and ballerina bar, including a clothes rack for dress up. It's amazing what you can do so cheap from the thrift store and Home Depot especially if you like to build stuff yourself. The playroom is just an office-sized room with lots of shelving along one wall. Our dining room is another play room with an indoor climbing wall/slide/tent area and another tent area with a crawl tube, 3 easels, and a dollhouse. Our main floor is definitely an indoor playground. We are still in the middle of mediating ESY and doing the kindergarten IEPs, which is not fun. The girls are doing great with potty-training since they started on Feb 14. We've been to 15+ medical appts. in the last few months for the girls, including 3 visits to emergency center, from upper Baltimore, MD, to Richmond, VA, and everywhere in between. And I still have three 3-day international trips in my line; just got back from a 2-day airline meeting. Little takes alot of psychological labor - he's in the testing & trying stages, and I am revamping his privileges to match his behavior. It seems to be slowly working. He's just too smart for his britches - if I give him two choices; he decides on a 3rd choice of his own and refuses to compromise. Whatever I say turns into a one-uppance type thing and he ends up in his room (due to his smart mouth), probably forgetting what he is even being punished for. So I give him a short recap and try to help him understand (short & sweet) how it could go alot better. I am definitely consistent and tweak when I need to - he's just a tough nut to crack. I can understand that we are the ones that created this little monster - because he gets Mommy and all the toys to himself all morning and when the girls come home, he won't share any of the toys (which he thinks are all his.) His Dad also takes him out on Saturdays so he's developed a sense of entitlement. This is unfair to the girls - finally Joe recognizes this as a problem. And little 's the only one in the house with his own room. Everyone else has to share a room. Being a mother is when you really learn in life, isn't it? I'm also learning that I need to take better care of myself and make some time for me so I can survive all this craziness in one piece. Anyway, so glad to have all of your friendships and support. Guest guest
Hi Everyone, I didn't hear back from anyone last time that it wasn't OK to still be here. I know your email had said no lurking but I so enjoy reading every ones posts and an learning from all the moms who have kids older than toddler age. Also call me crazy but even though my CVS result came back no DS I have these weird "gut" feeling something still isn't right and would hate to lose you all if I ended up needing you come Oct. due date. is about to end his school year next week, he had his first 10 weeks of special education Pre-K. We were so proud of him last week. He got an award at an all school assembly and he had only been there two months. It really touched my heart that the teacher and school gave it to him, I am hoping it means a lot of acceptance in the years to come. I will say though that I really saw a reality check in where he isn't at. Because did so well cognitively they allowed him to attend a "mild" classroom/school setting. He is the first kid with DS to attend there that people can remember and this is in a school distinct where there are 85 elementary schools! The school is pre-k through 5 th grade and he is the size of a 18 month old (he wears 12-18 month clothes!). He stood in line with kids as old as 11 and most all were typical kids, he kept throwing his award on the ground and was the only one up there with an aid and when he saw me he started to cry! All of a sudden I saw how far from typical he was. The school district has been so shoked at what he can do that typical kids can't like count, say the alphabet, know all his colors, etc. so I have been seeing him as typical as I could until last week, it was a little hard but I guess we need these checks to remind us what we need to keep doing. I have a few questions for you all, especially the moms with older kids. 1. CAROLINE- What do your kids do that they got diagnosed with OCD and how do they distinguish it from Autism? does a lot of repetitive things which I have been told isn't Autism, though I some times wonder, but have some times wondered if it might be OCD. 2. JOYCE- I also live in California and was wondering how many hours you got per kid and how you used the hours. I tend to use them when my mom can't watch and only if I have a place to go to. I really need to learn how to use the hours better because with a baby on the way I feel I am going crazy at home not getting anything done. We get 15 hours a month but I have friends who get a much as 30 hours and they have not health issues, just got lucky. 3. OTHER MOMS- How old were your kids when they started: a) putting words together articulating so the average person understands them c) Did anyone deal with throwing of things like food, toys etc. throws everything and no matter what we do we can't seem to discipline him or teach him to stop. Thank you to everyone who took the time to read this. Miriam mom to 3 yrs- with DS and baby due 10/19. Granata wrote: Hi All,Hello to the new folks! This is a great place to be. Guest guest
June 4th already, can't believe how fast the time is going. My twins are 2 1/2 and doing well. Adrienne is doing very well, but in the last month it has been a little bit harder to convince her that therapy activities are fun. We spend much of each morning working on everything her therapists do when they are here. She has done so well up to this point with her attention, now it seems like a struggle to get her to work with me. I keep telling myself she's no different than any other 2 1/2 year old that way, I don't think I could get Kayley to do an activity that was difficult for her either. I'm sure I will figure out what will work with her soon. I am so excited that potty training has gone as well as it has with both of them, but of course especially Adrienne. She still does not communicate to me that she has to go, but does very well just going when I think about taking her. She rarely has an accident, even when we are out and about. I am thinking this is a huge accomplishment so early for her, and hopefully a sign of what's to come!! I really appreciate reading all of your communications on IEPs and school decisions. I am learning soooo much from everyone's experiences. Adrienne will soon be out of Birth to 3 services here in Wisconsin which is part of Public Health and will move into the school system. We are shooting for inclusion in the Catholic School that my oldest daughter attends so we are working hard to get to that goal. Of course we will do what's best when the time comes, but I figure it doesn't hurt to have goals. Has anyone put their children through Intensive Therapy with the Therasuit? I have Adrienne scheduled for this in January. It will consist of her having therapy at the Special Children's Center here 3 hours a day for 3 weeks. Her PT has had kids make all sorts of gains from speech to fine motor in that period of time. She has told me it is like putting 6 months of therapy into 3 weeks. The program comes from Europe, apparently, and the center is excited about offering it. Thanks again to everyone for sharing, it sure helps me. I am looking forward to going to the national convention in August, too . I am feeling like I need some new ideas and some inspiration. Maybe some of us will run into each other! Have a great summer! Guest guest
Hello from Texas! Our little family is doing really well. The twins are working on rolling over, sitting up, and holding their bottles. The just turned 5 months old on the 29th, but their corrected age is 2 months. weighs 10-11 lbs and Caden is somewhere between 13-14 lbs. We learned last month that Cade has torticollis and plagiocephally. We are going to physical therapy to avoid wearing a helmet. is out performing her brother as usual. She can roll from her tummy to back and back to tummy. She LOVES tummy time, while Caden HATES it. had surgery on the 21st to correct 4 hernias due to prematurity. She is doing just fine and is back to her old self. They are both becoming very vocal and love to smile. They put on a show for us every chance they can get. ~, mom to 5 month old boy/girl twins Caden (DS) AOL now offers free email to everyone. Guest guest
Hi All, Sara (DS) is 12-1/2. I can truly relate to your e-mail, , about Davey sneaking food. Sara will do the same thing and then she hides it, under her bed, if I don't see her taking it into her bedroom or behind the t.v., if she sneaks something into the family room. Her favorite items from the refrigerator are left-over pasta, ketchup (she absolutely would eat a whole bottle if I am not monitoring) and yogurt. So far, she has not taken anything from the freezer. I can only imagine that "hidden" ice cream could be a mess. She can also be very stubborn, at times, and now we have a touch of the pre-teen attitude going with both Sara and her twin brother, . Our oldest son, who is now 16, really has been quite the breeze in terms of being self-motivated, a good boy, conscientious and responsible, so that's what I know about getting a son to age 16. Gabe and Sara have a different plan, however, I can see that already! Gabe is ignoring Sara at Middle School, so she constantly goes by his locker and sometimes opens it or at least touches it. Her aide tells me that that seems to be how she stays connected to Gabe. It breaks my heart, and I am talking to him about his attitude towards her. Sara's aide informs me that he is part of the "popular" crowd and that they all think they are pretty cool, so I suppose when Sara comes up behind him and tries to get his attention and he is around his friends, it embarrasses him, so we are working on a way that he can acknowledge Sara, so she doesn't feel ignored, but that still gives Gabe his "space". I have a feeling these middle school years could have a whole new set of challenges. It's great to hear from everyone. Marcia Mom to Sara (DS) and 12-1/2 and Lucas 16 Sara is in 5th Grade, Gabe is in 6th with 7 days of school left.See what's free at AOL.com. Guest guest
Hi everyone, and are doing well and will be celebrating their 5th birthday on July 2nd. (DS) will start the multidisabled program in the fall. I thought this program would be best due to her short attention span and immaturity. She will actually start there in the summer so at least she'll get used to the teachers and classroom routine. will be in full day kindergarten. I can't believe they're growing up so fast! Guest guest
Miriam, I am glad you are still here. Keep us posted! Davey is 7. He is a lot shorter than Will. I do my best not to compare him to Will or other kids. He is just Davey. He always amazes us with the things he says and does. We still have problems understanding some of the things that Davey says. Sign language really helped when he was younger, and we still use it to some extent. Davey can also be very stubborn. Although he doesn't throw things, he does have one VERY irritating habit that drives us all crazy. Davey will eat what he feels like, when he likes. He usually "sneaks in the refrigerator and gets the gallon of milk, the big container of cottage cheese, the left over pasts (you get the idea). He eats is right in front of the TV, spills, leaves it out so the dogs get into it, ice cream melts......... We have just about given up in trying to change this behavior. We are moving to a new home. I plan to have a walk in pantry with a lock on it. We will be getting a side by side frig that I will use a bicycle lock to keep closed. He broke the plastic ones you get at Target. Enjoy your pregnancy! Guest guest
Fantastic news on the potty training! -- Re: Check-in Day!, 6/4/2007, 12:00 am June 4th already, can't believe how fast the time is going. Guest guest
Marcia, It breaks my heart to hear about Sara & Gabe. does this to Tara already.....he tries to " align " himself with Bobby, not Tara...... I have imagined that when my twins are in middle school, I'll be faced with a similar senerio, infact, Tara will join in his school this Sept., will be in 3rd, Tara in 2nd. Right now, Tara's still in 1st grade, in a different building...... & Tara will also be back on the same bus in September, ..I know in the past, didn't want to sit with Tara when he was in 1st grade & she was in Kindergarten..... Oh boy!!!!!!!! Gail, Mom to.. Bobby 13, Jillian 10, & Tara (Ds) 8 Re: Check-in Day!, 6/4/2007, 12:00 am Hi All, Sara (DS) is 12-1/2. I can only imagine that " hidden " ice cream could be a mess. Sara's aide informs me that he is part of the " popular " crowd and that they all think they are pretty cool, so I suppose when Sara comes up behind him and tries to get his attention and he is around his friends, it embarrasses him, so we are working on a way that he can acknowledge Sara, so she doesn't feel ignored, but that still gives Gabe his " space " . I have a feeling these middle school years could have a whole new set of challenges. It's great to hear from everyone. Guest guest
Cyndy, The Therasuit concept intrigues me, and I looked it up online and it sounds very interesting. Do insurance co's cover something like that? I suppose it might fall under physical therapy. Let us know how that goes for Adrienne. That is something I might consider for Luke at some point. Good luck!
Guest guest
The clinic where goes does the Therasuit stuff, but it's never been discussed (one way or the other) for . Since they've never suggested it, I suppose that in her case they didn't feel it was a necessary treatment. I know of several kids who have done it though, with great results. In our state (WA), Medicaid does not cover it. Casey
Guest guest
Oh yes, the ice cream does make a huge mess. We have wine racks at the end of the kitchen island. They also make great "hiding places" for Davey's food treasures. So far, the worst one was the very spoiled glass of milk! I can't imagine the whole girl hormone thing again. Twice was enough! Guest guest
This is a very busy week here....last week of school. We just did kindergarten graduation for Jarod today......that was interesting......he was great.....but seeing the reactions we got towards (wheelchair, tube feed...) awful. I am not ready to send him to kindergarten in another year and have to deal with idiot parents and kids. Sorry to be so blunt.....it just hurt ME....probably didn't affect at all. I just want to protect his feelings. Anyway....Alyssa will be heading to HS next yr.... to MS.....Jarod to 1st......and back for a third yr of preschool with MRDD. just finished another round of atb for another sinus infection.....after weather hit 80's and 90's....go figure. Sadly, we only hit about 65 today.....I so enjoyed the heat for a change. That is it for the kiddos. As for me....still saddened with Jordan's absence. I am still so jealous of all the multiple Mom's who have all their multiples. Everyone always said only special moms got to be moms to multiples.....so guess that means I am crap.....whatever!!!!! I sure feel like crap!!!!! Feeling will never die til I do one day. SO, gotta suck it up. Guest guest
Hello, Staying very wet here in Texas. The mosquitos are out of control! And staying very busy with our three girls. Swim classes for our 4 yr.old (Taryn), horse riding and water therapy for Cate (3) along with pre-school at KinderFrogs in Ft. Worth. And working on crawling with our 1 yr. old, Ella. And trying to sneak in time with my husband! (By the way, which program offers the respite care that a number of people have referenced). Wanted to send a couple of comments to: LAUREN: Cate also had torticollis and plagiocephaly. We did a consult with a neurosurgeon at Children's Medical Center in Dallas and eventually placed her in a helmet (DOC Band) for approx. 6 months. She wore it 23 hours a day. The best thing we have done........made a huge difference in the shape of her skull. If you go this route, don't wait too long. There is a "window of opportunity" for the most effective results. I believe it is before 15-18 months of age. SHERYL: Our second daughter, Cate, has the most sensitve skin I have ever seen. I have never encountered such horrible diaper rash which occurs so quickly. Cate has Hirschsprungs and required a colostomy when she was a month old. She had a colostomy takedown at 9 months of age and that's when our journey with diaper rash started. Since a portion of her large intestine was removed, her stool was so acidic. I have tried every possible item on the market along with any home remedy I could get my hands on. And I did not have any luck with prescribed ointments. Eventually, we found a mix of zinc oxide and stomahesive powder (available over the counter in certain pharmacies, usually compounding pharmacies) did the trick for Cate. Even now, we still use it, because she can develop a horrible rash after just one stool exposure. And I will mix in Nystatin if a yeast infection develops.Highly recommend it! JULIE: You are such an inspiration! I marvel at all you do for Haley and Nikki. What lucky girls to have you as their mom! I so enjoy reading all the emails and have learned so much. What a great group! Koz-Riddle Mom to Taryn,4, Cate,3 (ds) and Ella,1 (ds) Miriam Kang wrote: Hi Everyone, I didn't hear back from anyone last time that it wasn't OK to still be here. Granata <juliesurecode> wrote: Hi All,Hello to the new folks! So now I'm in the middle of setting up the house for a "classroom." Our dining/kitchen now has a homemade monthly calendar and I add the next number each day; there's a kindergarten creed ("Today - I will do more than I have to do; I will treat others as I want to be treated; And I will try to become a better person.") and the playroom is set up with a play kitchen/ dining room/living room/baby room/music area/ library area and I am designing an area with a large mirror and ballerina bar, including a clothes rack for dress up. Anyway, so glad to have all of your friendships and support.Regards, GranataWife to JoeMom to Haley & Nikki, 4 1/2 yr identical twin girls, both w/DS & prematurity, and , 3 yr sonLeesburg, VAMultiples-DS wrote:> Reminder from: *Multiples-DS Yahoo! Guest guest
Hi Deanna, I'm giving you a big hug over the email. It must really suck! I can't imagine where you are supposed to put it in your head so that the pain goes away. Your children are so beautiful and it doesn't lessen the pain because you have them - my guess is that it can make it just as hard, if not harder at times. Wherever you keep the pain in your heart or your head, I know you also keep the belief that Jordan is with you constantly, out of suffering and pain, and loving you in the deepest most infinite way. You are an amazing woman! There's got to be a much better world in Heaven after all of this. He has to be there! Because Life can really suck. The way that parents and kids that are typical treat us makes me furious too, because they just make our lives even harder, if that's possible. They are so ignorant. They have no idea how important our role is in this world. They could do the neighborly thing and be kind and supportive, but their immaturity and ignorance just shines through. They don't have a clue how important our children are for their children, to break the vicious " entitled attitude " cycle. I try to get beyond the anger and just feel sorry for them. It doesn't always work. Regards, Deannalee0524@... wrote: > > This is a very busy week here....last week of school. Guest guest
Oh Deanna, Hugs to you and your family. I cannot even imagine how you must feel. I had great concerns for Davey when he started school. He has won everyone over with his charm and smile. Hopefully it will be same for ! -- Check-in Day!, 6/4/2007, 12:00 amReminder from: Multiples-DS Yahoo! Group Title: Check-in Day! Guest guest
Deanna, I met your family and they are GREAT!!! Don't let the craziness of life w/ your busy family confuse you about what a great mom you are. has alot of issues and you are dealing with all of them well. It really doesn't matter what other people feel, and you know that, it's just hard to always be strong. He will win over some parents/teachers and some he won't that will be their problem. Did you ever join a support group after Jordan passed? Our local multiples group in Orlando has a wonderful group for support when they feel overwhelmed with losing a multiple or all their multiples. I will pray for your heart and your spirit. You are not alone. irene Check-in Day!, 6/4/2007, 12:00 amReminder from: Multiples-DS Yahoo! Group Title: Check-in Day! Guest guest
Isaac and will be 1 on 6/23/07! Both are healthy and very fun. Will is crawling, pulling up and cruising some. Isaac is very close to sitting up by himself and can get into the crawling position occaisionally, but just rocks back and forth. Isaac has turned into a champion babbler. It's funny because Will babbles mamamama all the time and Isaac babbles dadadada all the time. Will is learning some signs -- all done, more & dog. Isaac waived bye-bye to me yesterday twice (although he wouldn't do it this morning!). Both boys are eating more finger foods. Isaac loves the gerber puffs and cheerios and has no trouble getting them into his mouth despite his limited pincer skills. They interact more and are both getting bigger. We are into the 24mos sizes for both boys, although Will is longer and heavier than Isaac now. So, that's it for my check-in. I'll keep checking in and look forward to hearing all the advice about the older children. , mom to twins, Isaac (DS) and Will b. 6-23-2006.
