Guest guest Posted April 13, 2006 Report Share Posted April 13, 2006 Hi Irene, Sara has been involved in horseback riding through Healing Reins, a riding stable sort of near us (which is why she is not doing it currently), for children with disabilities. This stable is 80 miles roundtrip from our house and I made the drive once a week for almost three years. She liked it a lot, but was not passionate about it and wanted to take a break, for now. The program Zack is in sounds very similar to Sara's and Zack may be someone who stays with it for a long time, possibly riding in horse shows or parades or even some competitions, which were things Healing Reins offered. Sara is now taking two dance classes a week and is involved in Girl Scouts. With her two brothers also involved in sports and jazz band, and all involved in church activities, my week was quite full, so time off from the 80-mile roundtrip is quite appreciated for now. But after years of riding Mercede started to get afraid. So we stopped it two years ago, because I couldnt' stand her screaming. WE got funding for it, but now we are using the funding for the girls to go to summer camp. I was afraid to let my girls go with strangers for a week but they love it. Last year we did Camp Wonderland and this year we are doing Camp Barnabus. Both are camps in Missouri. It is nice having a week break. Thanks for sharing, he is doing so well to be new to it and all! Zack should be seeing a vision therapist but the drive time (49 minutes each way) is just too much. So for the time being he's going horseback riding 1X week instead. Who knows if his interest will wean, we'll see. We looked into Cub Scouts but each of the boys would be in a different troop each w/ demands for volunteers etc, so for know we are hanging out in our neighborhood w/ our friends and fishin" , collecting bugs, riding bikes instead every day. We have scholarship programs for camp for all 4 of my kids, but it's drive them in the am, work all day and pick them up, it's not the same? We are pleased to have found a program that will allow Zack all day M-F, having his siblings is a benefit, they keep him in line too. I don't send him on the really big field trips, but he goes skating, bowling, and movies etc. It was great last year for the young counselors from Stetson teaching University, to actually spend time w/ someone like Zack.
