Guest guest
Hello to all, My name is , husband and 8 year old twins Vinnie (DS) and Sloan. They will be 9 this May. Vinnie's major medical problems are sinus problems and alopecia, (baldness) Vinnie started losing his hair after he was 2 years old. Doctors say that usually it will grow back after a year, Vinnie's hair has never grown back except for his eye brows and eye lashes which they still fall out and grow back. I had a child ask me if I did that to his hair, I said no God did that to his hair. I mostly lurk on the list, because I don't have alot of free time to respond. I have been around since this list was created. I hope everyone is well with this nasty winter weather. --- Multiples-DS wrote: > Reminder from: Multiples-DS Yahoo! Guest guest
With four kids going different directions, it is always crazy here. My oldest, Amy (19) moved out last summer to be closer to the university. She is working hard at school and also working as a respite worker 20-30 hours a week for our local agency. Kelsey is almost 17 and taking AP classes at school. She has a job at a spa as a receptionist on Saturdays. She is big into her horses and also rides horses for a couple of other people. Davey and Will will be 7 this month! I found this group when they were a couple of month old. Davey has been very healthy, except for a bout of strep this last week. I hope we all don't catch it! Davey loves school and is very musical. He got a guitar for Christmas and loves singing for us. Will is not so sure he likes school, but still made the Principal's last for his first semester in 1st grade. Both boys can't wait for T-ball to start. My husband bought the boys new bats yesterday, so baseball fever is gaining around here! Last year most of their games were snowed out! Hope everyone is well. I love hearing about everyone's families. -- Check-in Day!, 2/5/2007, 12:00 am Reminder from: Multiples-DS Yahoo! Group Title: Check-in Day! Guest guest
Good Morning! Here in Northern NJ, we snow board & ski allot. My older two are also just beginning Lacrosse practices for the spring season. plays Lacrosse as well, but in 2nd grade, they don't travel to other towns yet. Tara will continue taking swimming lessons, every Saturday morning. I have yet to get her on her skis this season, but I'll do it, since my husband doesn't ski, it's all on me to get all my kids to the mountain. On the school front, I requested that a team be established and attend a workshop in April, given by the NJCIE ( New Jersey Coalition for Inclusion Education) it's a whole day workshop dedicated on our "focus child" (that would be Tara) to teach the "team" how to included Tara in the reg. ed. classroom. The team consists of, Tara's current spec. ed. teacher, me, the parent, Tara's new teacher for next year, 2nd. grade. And now I found out that the Dir. of Special Services wants to go too (he's new) and the Principal of the building where Tara will be this Sept. also. WOW!!! I have requested that we attend this workshop for two consecutive years, and I was always turned down by the "old" Director. Now I feel better that this new Dir. seams to be taking me seriously, and wants to learn all he can, the district even paid for me to attend!!! I also wanted to do this in April, BEFORE we sit for Tara's annual review sometime in May. Guest guest
Hello everyone! I haven't had as much luck in the healthy department. Once Molly recovered from her pneumonia, we landed back at the University of Minnesota for a PDA repair. It was essentially closed all these months and then they think because of all the pressure on her lungs, it opened her PDA wide open. So we fixed it in the cath lab so no puncture sites. She never acted sick, had NO pain-literally!, and were back home within 24 hours of the surgery so that was nice. She continues to need O2 at night to sleep--ummm? We don't see the pulmonologist until Feb 21st to find out what that is all about. The hospital I work at has had 1-3 DS babies being born each month. I think it's time that I start talking to the mommy's. Especially the undiagnosed moms that haven't had time to process the information. I think I will be good at it?? I felt that maybe since Molly is only 4 motnhs old, I wouldn't have much to offer but all these DS babies keep landing in my lap. So anyway, I am going to give it a shot. Do any of you talk to new moms and dads? Other than that, everything is same old same old around here. Bored stiff? Loosen up...Download and play hundreds of games for free on Yahoo! Games. Guest guest
We only had 2 preschool classes so my triplets had to double-up in one of the classes. The first year, I put my typical boys together (keeping my daughter(dS) alone), but the second year we decided to put her with one of her brothers. In retrospect, we chose the right brother -- he's much less "maternal" with her than my other son is, so he was able to do his own thing and not feel the need to keep checking on her. The following year, we had the same situation in K and the new school felt very strongly that the boys be split up so I put the other brother with her -- and we did have some problems with her doting on her too much (according to the teacher, anyway -- I don't think that the teacher understood that, although he was physically touching her often (he liked to put his hand on her back), he really could do his own thing much of the time); actually, I think it was more a problem for him (getting in trouble for touching her, and being forced to respond to her behavior in a different way than he had been instructed to at home) than it was for her. I think the bottom line is the personalities/relationship of your twins: I know of some twins who could not be together (typically because they relied on each other too much socially and academically, which is more often the case when one twin is developmentally behind as ours are), and others who could not be apart (because one twin needed to be able to quickly "check in" on his twin, and would be perpetually stressed/distracted when he couldn't)... and that's a decision that only YOU (vs. the school) can make. Guest guest
Hi All. I am Missy mother to 3 year old girls, and Sadie (ds). In January, Sadie started preschool with the public school system. does not qualify for services. It was a hard transition but is slowly understanding that Sadie goes to "class" and gets to go spend 1on 1 time with Mommy or Granny (who watches them for 4 days while I work). We supplement therapy by doing outside private therapy. Sadie goes to speech therapy 1 day a week and we are in the process of getting her signed up for OT/PT (we do alot of these therapies ourselves). We took a break from therapies after Sadie turned 3 in November which was a huge relief. Sadie had been in services every week since she was 6 weeks old and I felt that I really lost a lot of "mommy" time with both kids. I too am a lurker but I do participate every now and then. There is a bunch of information that I have learned and I am so greatful for all the advice and expertise that I get to read about. Guest guest
Just checking in. has had a cold but is better now. He has actually been pretty healthy otherwise except for a bad sinus infection awhile back. We took him to see Sesame Street Live (Elmo Sings) in Kansas City on Saturday and he really enjoys going to that each year. It was bitter cold but was a fun day. attends the day service program each day during the week at Achievement Services. The staff they have right now does a great job with everyone. They have had some staff in the past that has been not so good and I was glad when they either quit or was fired. We are fortunate that the Director of Achievement Services is also our State Representative in Topeka, KS, so when we have Legislative concerns about persons with disabilities we have an inside track. He has been in the House of Representatives for several years now and has really been a good advocate in all areas. Hope everyone is doing well and it isn't too cold where you are!! Guest guest
- Gretchen started prek when she turned 3 (in November). Since the girls did not turn 3 until November, my other twin-a (typical, non-DS) was not eligible to be in the prek program with Gretchen. So, we put them together in the same prek class the following school year when they were 4. a was MY crutch. I depended on her to tell me what was going on in class and to help interpret for Gretchen since she was non-verbal. We quickly saw that a was becoming such the typical middle child and needed an identity of her own. So, for their 3rd year of preschool, I separated the girls. In fact, I sent a to a different preschool, which my son had attended years ago so we knew that program and it was the right program for a. I was VERY nervous about spliting them up, well let me tell you, I am SOOO glad that we did it. Both girls have flourished this year. Gretchen is holding her own and a has found herself and is happy. I actaul ly have one on one time with each of them and lots of together time for all three of us. So, if you want to talk more about separating them, feel free to email me offline. Guest guest
We have had quite the weekend here in Roanoke, Virginia! After we made the decision to go ahead with Will's T & A,I thought we could take a break from stress for a little while. Not so in a house with 4 kids. Jake had a huge lump pop up on the left side of his neck on Saturday. It wasn't there when I got him dressed but when we got home from this mini carnival at the mall, it was there and the size of a very large golf ball. We spent about 10 hours in the ER and after every test they coud imagine, they decided that it was probably a swollen lymph node and sent us home on antibiotics. Then on Sunday, we went to the early church service so that we could go to the circus that afternoon. We came and the girls went into their room to get it clean before we left. slammed the door to keep Will out but managed to shut it with Will's middle and ring finger inside the hinge side of the door. They looked like they were clearly broken so I taped them together and gave him some motrin and made the decision not to spend another 10 hours in the ER as long as he acted okay. He cried for about 30 min and then took his nap. I took the girls to the circus and Brad stayed with the boys. When we got home, they were all downstairs in the playroom and Will was using his hand and fingers like there was nothing wrong. I took them both to our pediatrician today and they switched Jake's antibiotic since his neck was no better, did another blood count which was better and tried to assure me that none of them there thought he had cancer. I then took Will for an x ray of his hand and his fingers are not broken. All is well that ends well, right??????? Thanks for listening, mom to (7), (4) Will(ds) and Jake(2) ---- Multiples-DS wrote: > Reminder from: Multiples-DS Yahoo! Guest guest
Hi All, Welcome to the new members. Thank goodness that Irene and her family are doing well. That was too close for comfort! To the new Mom's - I recommend the signingtime DVDs (www.signingtime.com) and the Leap Frog ABCS, phonics, math, etc. DVDs (from Target/Walmart) for your babies. Congratulations on your babies! Haley & Nikki are starting to use spontaneous expressive language more; Nikki used her first 3 words, " I want down " and then just pushed her way out of my arms! My mouth just dropped. Did I hear what I thought I heard? Since then, Haley & Nikki have spontaneously initiated, engaged, and terminated conversation, even though the recent school evals suggest otherwise. The latest was, " DaDa, JoJo, be back. " This is huge because we didn't ask her to say it; she initiated it! It's the kind of moment that we experience after waiting patiently for so long and wondering if the therapies are really working, and then, when you least expect it... The girls are in the middle of reeligibility and our county doesn't recognize the DD label after age 5. My husband is not sitting easy with the MR label that the school feels the girls " need. " They're premature, still in 18-24 month size clothes at ages 4 1/2 yrs and had alot of surgeries and procedures that caused alot of their delays since they were always on their backs healing from post-ops. They have severe dyspraxia and dysarthia. They learn in motion and with music; but the school chooses to restrain them and stop any perservasive behaviors, rather than give them sensory input they are craving in order to attend to tasks. The school even said that all people with Trisomy 21 are MR, unless they have mosaic ds. That doesn't sound right to me. They're not doctors. Whatever... The evaluations even say since the girls don't tell you if they are wet or dry, and they don't go away from others when they are having a bowel movement, they aren't ready to potty train. Such nonsense! Thank goodness Kennedy Krieger Institute thinks its nonsense too. I probably could have trained them by now; just too many babies and not enough mommies and time in a day! I realize that two children with significant delays can overwhelm a teacher and I was successful in adding an aide to the classroom to help her because of this for the last two preschool years. But denying the girls their rights is something I will not sit still for. Why should they have to start kindergarten in a self-contained room because there's no changing table in the inclusive kindergarten classroom? Placement will be another uphill battle... There are still medical concerns going on: allergy/feeding clinic/dietary/nutritional/sleep studies/hearing/ENT. There are 4 appts this week and several more throughout the month besides oral motor therapy. Thank goodness they are pretty healthy otherwise; have been doing well with hardly a cold this winter season. I think the isotonic antioxidants they drink first thing each a.m. on an empty stomach is really making a big difference. Even with all of the above, Haley & Nikki are such happy little girls. Little is doing great. He will start preschool in September at a local Christian school. I'm so excited for him; wish he could start now. He needs some buddies to hang out with. He was so kind to the other children at registration. They were shy and wouldn't speak and he was kind to them, even started signing words when he thought they didn't understand or hear language. " Do you want to play? " It was so cute. One boy was a little pushy and instead of pushing back, just kept walking backwards and said, " Hands to self. " keeps saying, " Santa Claus is watching me. " I keep thinking that he needs to learn about Jesus because he needs to have a good base of religion and spirituality so he can handle what lies ahead. That's the scoop in a nutshell. Sorry for rambling... Thank God you all are here to help me raise my babies! Time to retire. It's been a rough few weeks... few months... several years.... but who's counting! I'm so ready for a spa weekend! Regards, Granata Mom to Haley & Nikki, 4 1/2 yr twin girls, both w/DS, and 2 1/2 yr son Multiples-DS wrote: > Reminder from: *Multiples-DS Yahoo! Have a gentle evening. -- Re: Check-in Day!, 2/5/2007, 12:00 am We have had quite the weekend here in Roanoke, Virginia! All is well that ends well, right???????Thanks for listening, mom to (7), (4)Will(ds) and Jake(2)---- Multiples-DS wrote: > Reminder from: Multiples-DS Yahoo! Guest guest
Hello everyone, Keeping my head above water with three girls! Taryn,4 is such an active, inquisitive girl and loves going to science museum pre-school. Due to this school, no fear of snakes, spiders, etc. Cate is back in pre-school at KinderFrogs at TCU (in Ft. Worth). I had pulled her out last fall, due to constant illness. She had a T & A in October and truly, is a different girl. We can't believe how her eating has advanced, I thought she would live on yogurt and baby food! And one upper respiratory infection since October. And three weeks ago, finally started walking. Ella has done great after her heart surgery in June, such the butterball. Just found out today she will need eye surgery to correct a weakened right eye muscle along with a blocked tear duct. Supposed to be outpt. surgery. Question for : what type of antioxidants do you use? Very interested in getting them started on vitamin supplements. Comment for : In the last two months at work, I have encountered three babies with down syndrome in the nursery. All born to teenagers, one mom was 15! I couldn't say anything to two of the moms since their official genetic studies had not returned. I find it frustrating, but I understand the parents are probably not in any condition to even discuss the possibility of the diagnosis. The other mom had received the diagnosis, but seemed to be in shock. The grandmother was more open to info about ECI, local down syndrome groups, etc; Time to get some much needed sleep..........I appreciate all the advice and useful tips on this discussion group. Such a great help! Koz-Riddle Mom to Taryn,4, Cate,2 (ds) and Ella,11 months (ds) Hi All, Welcome to the new members. Congratulations on your babies!Haley & Nikki are starting to use spontaneous expressive language more; Nikki used her first 3 words, "I want down" and then just pushed her way out of my arms! My mouth just dropped. Did I hear what I thought I heard? Since then, Haley & Nikki have spontaneously initiated, engaged, and terminated conversation, even though the recent school evals suggest otherwise. The latest was, "DaDa, JoJo, be back." This is huge because we didn't ask her to say it; she initiated it! It's the kind of moment that we experience after waiting patiently for so long and wondering if the therapies are really working, and then, when you least expect it... :)The girls are in the middle of reeligibility and our county doesn't recognize the DD label after age 5. My husband is not sitting easy with the MR label that the school feels the girls "need." They're premature, still in 18-24 month size clothes at ages 4 1/2 yrs and had alot of surgeries and procedures that caused alot of their delays since they were always on their backs healing from post-ops. "Do you want to play?" It was so cute. One boy was a little pushy and instead of pushing back, just kept walking backwards and said, "Hands to self." keeps saying, "Santa Claus is watching me." I keep thinking that he needs to learn about Jesus because he needs to have a good base of religion and spirituality so he can handle what lies ahead. That's the scoop in a nutshell. Sorry for rambling... Thank God you all are here to help me raise my babies! Time to retire. It's been a rough few weeks... few months... several years.... but who's counting! I'm so ready for a spa weekend! Regards, GranataMom to Haley & Nikki, 4 1/2 yr twin girls, both w/DS, and 2 1/2 yr sonMultiples-DS wrote:> Reminder from: *Multiples-DS Yahoo! Guest guest
I've posted news, but here is an update: is still at her school, for now. I have agreed to extend the " old " IEP another month, as we continue to gather information for this new one. Our assistive tech meeting is next Friday (the 16th) and the new behavior guy will be in to observe (a full day, I hope) sometime next week. They continue to rigidly send her to the principals office for any minor infraction. My lawyer has submitted a list of suggestions/requests to be implemented immediately, until the new behavior study is completed. No longer sending her to the principal is high on my list. They sent her 7 times in 4 days last week! It's ridiculous! They don't have any positive supports in place, they just punish her afterward and document the hell out of it to bolster their case. The good news is that she is really getting the hang of simple addition and her handwriting has improved tremendously! is having a good year too. He is very eagerly awaiting permission to read the 4th Harry Potter book and has recovered from his best friend moving 90 miles away. It's hard to believe they are 7 already. commented that she'll be 8 on her next birthday, and it blew me away! I just can't imagine they are that " old " . Anyway, it's nice to read everyone's updates. I look forward to reading some more. Casey, mom to (DS) and , 7 >

Guest guest
Hi all, It is great to hear all of the updates from our families. We are enjoying record high 60+ degree temperatures here in Oregon. It's like spring, today! Sara, now age 12, was in a dance recital Saturday night. We were very proud of her. She danced in three dances. My favorite was to the song, "Body Electric" from the soundtrack of "Fame". She loves the song, so put a lot of herself into it. I was very touched. She continues to love Middle School and is doing well. Gail, I could relate to what you said about skiing. I have had Sara up only once, as it is a challenge--we are working on turning and stopping; until she gets those, I cannot let her be away from me, so she holds onto my poles turned side ways. Most of my skiing, this year, has been focused on our oldest son, Lucas, who is on the high school ski team. He will go to State, early in March in Slalom and if he does well, this weekend, will go in Giant Slalom, as well. Parents get to stand and watch the gates as the kids race, so that has been my job--freezing on the mountain on Saturdays. I have great faith that Sara will ski, one day. It is just a slow process. I need to put her in more lessons, especially designed for kids with special needs. Gabe, Sara's twin brother, also loves to ski and plays tournament basketball. Lacrosse begins for the boys in the spring, as well. It's great to hear from everyone. Take care, Marcia Mom to Sara (DS) and 12 and Lucas

Guest guest
This is Joyce , Vaughan's mother, checking in from Tyler, Texas. has caught you up on the doings of my grandchildren 8, 4, and Will (DS) and Jake 2, in Roanoke Virginia. I have noticed a couple of new Texas families. Anybody near Tyler? I have also noticed the nurses among you mentioning the arrival of several babies with Down syndrome in their hospitals. We have had a little run of other trisomies here, last week a baby with Trisomy 13 (Patau's syndrome) and this week a baby with Trisomy 18 ( syndrome). It's good to be in a position to help when you can.Multiples-DS wrote: Reminder from: Multiples-DS Yahoo! Group Title: Check-in Day! Guest guest
We are all battling the arctic freeze here in Ohio. We have had two "snow" days....actually for sub zero weather. Today we are getting hit with a few inches of snow on top of that. So far, all the kids are doing well. is working on walking with a walker about 50 feet at a time. He just turned 4 on the 20th. Today happens to mark 4 years since Jordan was laid to rest, so it has been a rough week for me. I hope everyone else is doing well and staying warm. Nicala recently had a CT scan and we are awaiting the results. although younger then Nicala & is bigger....not much new with her....just growing like a weed. I cut a portion of my thumb off on Saturday (table saw) so I have been dealing with that since then....having to have the dressing constantly changed and see a plastic surgeon today (in regards to having skin graphing done...the left over skin got chopped up in the saw). , mom to Nicala & ,ds/adhd/autism (10), (8) and (1)

I apologize for not posting messages consistently. is doing well, has been relatively healthy besides minor cold symptoms. She's still taking dance class once a week. It's getting alittle frustrating sitting on the sidelines, she hasn't been focused the last 2 weeks and she's doing her own dancing. is going to start Tee Ball in the Spring. I don't know how the parents with more than 2 kids manage the activites.
