Kate (9 yrs) has been " practicing " spending the night at grandma & grandpa's in

preparation for this weekend when her best friend had a sleepover. She, the

birthday girl and one other are all best friends at school (and have been since

1st grade). Kate has been so excited to do this . . . some trepidation and

worries surrounding the actual " sleeping over " part but otherwise really doing

well.

So, we dropped her off last night and didn't hear a peep. When the 8 o'clock

passed we were hopeful. When 10 o'clock passed we knew she'd done it! We were

SO excited for her . . . and relieved!

We went to bed at 11 o'clock and then, at midnight, the phone rang. She said

she just couldn't get to sleep . . . had tried reading her book, etc. We went

and picked her up even though she didn't seem all that upset. Turns out her

whole demeanor changed the second I told her we'd come get her. The friend's

mom said her whole face cleared and she got really chatty -- prior to that she

seemed pretty stressed out although she held it together and didn't cry or get

overly expressive of any anxiety.

She seemed wide awake when she got home. But she lay down in her own bed, put

her arm around her favorite stuffed animal, and started singing softly to

herself. She was out like a light within 3 minutes! I think they just kept her

up too late (the girls watched a movie until 10:30!) as she's never been up much

past 9 o'clock, even on New Years Eve. I think she was probably way overtired

and into the " second wind " phase. She was up again at 6 this morning, though.

Early to bed tonight for her!!!

Beth
