>Finally, how do I know if my boys would benefit from taking enzymes

to help with digestive issues? What enzymes have people have success

with? Where are they available?<

First of all you should join the enzymesandautism list. (Yahoo) There are many

archives to explain enzymes. I recommend the Houston Neutraceutical brand. You

can go to the website www.houstonni.com. not sure if I spelled it right. There

may be only one n. The enzymes group is great for any questions we have before

starting and also during.

Subject: FW: My Daughter is having remarkable results with Houston

Enzymes http://216.114.78.114/webcenter/sites/HNI/

Well, after giving up on the other cheaper cost enzymes and my daughters

building emotions and problems at school and home and the good advice of

another Parent we purchased all 3 Houston Enzymes and used them over the

3 week Holiday break.

Ok some want to know what the other brands were, we tried Kirkmans

http://www.kirkmanlabs.com/ and generic ones from Puritans Pride

http://www.puritanspride.com . We had no effect with them.

Have you experienced constipation while using the enzymes?

Hi ,

I noticed no one had answered your response, so I thought I should

give you a heads up that I have heard some kids are bit more

constipated but I mostly have heard good things about bms. We have

been on Houston enzymes for so long it is hard to think back to pre-

enzymes---we started Houston enzymes Dec. 2001. My son has some

constipation issues that impact his behavior and performance but I

am not sure if it is from the enzyme use.

This is something I would closely monitor if you start any new

vitamin or enzyme treatment--you are such a smart cookie to be

concerned with this. I hope you notice something good. We started

slow with just the Zyme and then added the Pep 1/4 of a capsule at a

time. We are still on a special diet so we do not use the enzymes

in place of diet restrictions. We have had occasional infractions

with enzymes with no negative response but it is not something I

would dive into regulary.

I do want to remind anyone that is thinking about starting enzymes

that there are parents out there that have said enzymes have not

helped their kids. Some parents have said that Kirkmans worked

better than Houstons so it is also trial and error.

I also feel that my son is very dependent on the enzymes and I don't

view this as an ideal situation. After seeing Dr. Jaqueline

McCandless, a food sensitivity test showed him reactive to

aspergillus which can be related back to the enzymes--they are

derived from this. On her advice we stopped the enzymes but stayed

GFCF soy, beef, yeast, sugar free. Within 2 weeks he stopped

talking completely. I called Devin and he said he didn't feel that

the enzymes caused the aspergillus positive reaction. Dr.

McCandless said to go back on the enzymes and see what happens and

within a few days he was talking again. When we started the enzymes

over 2 years ago, he was talking with over 100 words so I am not

sure what to conclude here. Overall he is doing very well right now

and I know enzymes are a part of the success but for my son, but it

did not heal his gut or he would not regress so dramatically when

off of them (he is a MMR child with high levels of measles and

rubella). It is also not the only reason why he is doing as well as

he is. We anticipate staying on the enzymes forever.

I highly recommend reading the FILES from the

http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/EnzymesandAutism/ list.

Good luck,

Theresa, SA

I have a new question about enzymes. Did anyone find that although their lil

one was communicating more, they were also stimming more when they started

enzymes? Is that related? Does it die off?

Yes. It gave him diahhrea too. I didn't stick with it long enough

to see if it would go away. It was early in my son's PDD diagnosis

so I didn't know as much as I do now. Turns out he was reacting to

the bromelain, which is made from pineapples. He tested moderately

intolerant to all citrus fruits on his IgG/IgE Food Panel. I forgot

that little fact when I ordered it.

FYI I sent an email today to Dr. Houston about this issue. He

emailed back saying that they were coming up with a new HP-Zyme

Prime formula without papaya (papain) or pineapple (bromelain).

Hi,

Enzymes have also been attributed to destroying the outer cell of

yeast which can cause stimming and other such things as a " die-off "

toxin effect. If your child has had a recent clear urine test then

the stimming is probably not related to that.

Also, if a child was not purely GFCF before starting the enzymes,

there will probably be withdrawals from the lack of peptides, which

could have behavior implications.

Good luck, Theresa
