I was the only non-RN there and was told by her that she was less than optimistic about a private practice working without the RN credentials. I paid my own way there, wasn't getting paid to sit there, passed her mock exam and kept up and knew all her questions when she put me on the "spot" .There were only 9 of us there so she knew us quite well and could really probe into our backgrounds. I point blank told her that I'm not sure what I'll do with the IBCLC credential whether pp or doula or decide to go back and get a nursing degree. I definitely came back from the class feeling like the RN credential is paramount.

I started out as a LLL Leader and wanted to learn more because I could help mothers in my LLL capacity and for there decided to think about the IBCLE. Can I sheepishly say that I just want to help moms and if it amounts to any money that would be great! I get the calls from moms about the breastfeeding issues that happen post hospital, so I know there is a need- here in my area. Also quick help and the ability to get over to see a mom asap. If I could help 1 mom breastfeed a little longer- couldn't I measure that as personal success (again sheepishly I'm admitting)?

The words of encouragement/ success stories that I read from all you non-RN are enlightening and so encouraging.Thank you!

The bottom line- aren't we there to support and encourage each other so ultimately we can help mothers?

I'm chiming in as a newbie too (eagerly awaiting test results) only to say I had the opposite experience with her.  Granted I was in a much larger group - there were about 35 RN's in my 3 day review class.  And myself and one other who were both LLLL and CD's.  I  enjoyed her class because I loved how much of a clinical emphasis she put on it.  It helped me hone my study skills to bone up on the areas I knew I was weak in.

But with regards to her being negative about non RN IBCLC, I really didn't get the vibe from her at all.  I got the opposite - that she was our champion there, she wanted more of us there and that she felt that RN's could learn from us.  We sat together, myself and the other LLLL, and Marie would turn to us and say, with respect, " Ok, wait, before you all answer, how would a LLLL answer " ... and she'd use our answer as a learning point of trips & traps that a clinically trained person might fall in to.  I can totally see what you mean by " putting you on the spot " but in our class it was a positive learning outcome I felt.  She spoke to how LLLL " get " the relationship building aspect.  It became an interesting conversation one morning about the differences in early training and what helps & hurts you.   And I have to say, I came away feeling kind of proud amongst all the RNs and CNMs.

Anyway, just a sympathy email to say I totally get how you just want to help moms!  Rock on ..... you're doing a great thing, giving a great gift!  I think it's wonderful and you should  keep going and doing what feels right .... because it IS right!  Nothing sheepish about it!!

My co-Leader felt  like Marie's prep course 'overprepared' her for the exam... the actual exam being more basic in nature than she was led to believe it would be by Marie's course.   It made her less confident about the exam since she was looking for zebras when it was likely horses, if that analogy makes sense.  She appreciated all she learned in terms of increasing her general knowledge, but in terms of exam prep, found her course to be 'too much information.'  Did any of you have that experience?

I loved all the info she gave and I definitely feel prepared for the exam and I'm also doing the BreastEd series (I love to learn and can't seem to get enough). Don't get me wrong I did enjoy the class and I will push forward through any other's negativity Further thinking about it, I also think that we are feeling the effects of the current economy and maybe her lack of optimism is also linked to that. She did make comments of feeling effects on her own business-I'll just chalk it up to that.

I did though get encouragment from the nurses there and that meant alot!

As a newbie looking in..certain aspects of this journey are intimidating, so again I say thanks for the great success stories and the passion I hear from you all. That's where I want to go and what I want to share with others.

I'll continue to "sponge" up whatever you can give!

That's ridiculous! I have corrected her info a few times during her class--she is familiar with at least one non RN IBCLC who is successful and knows her stuff. an RN will help you get a job in a hosp.---it won't necessarily help in PP. >>>The bottom line- aren't we there to support and encourage each other so ultimately we can help mothers?>>

aren't we where? confused....

I am another IBCLC (8 years now) with a LLL background, and no nursing degree. I have several colleagues with similar backgrounds, who work in hospital lactation centers here, as well as in private practice. in fact, the majority of the IBCLCs I know personally are all from a similar background. IBLCE sprang out of LLL, and was not intended as a certification program for nurses - it's an entirely separate process. I sometimes liken it to other allied health degrees - such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, etc. - many of those professions do not have nursing as a required, or even desired, background.
