oh and re: generic and the anti-dom attitudes not being from pharma -

People on the CDC are from Pharma. People from CDC, IOM, NIH... all the agencies that provide funding, they are people who have financial relationships with pharma.

Even the FDA. and the formula companies are owned by pharma. there's a definite interest in DECREASED breastfeeding success.

Re: domperidone

I'm with Jan that Big Pharma is pressuring the FDA. Wouldn't be the first time.

It is so interesting, as an LLLL I can't really talk about DP anymore, however in PP one of my moms (who is a middle management for FDA) went and got hers last week from a compound pharmacy here in Columbia, MD??? So go and figure out.

My understanding is it is not illegal for mother to buy or use it, however it is illegal for Dr to Rx, and pharmacist to sell it.KindlyAnn-- Mother's milk is the normal food for human babies.

Hi,

It's OTC in the Netherlands as well, also as much as you like and also much cheaper (= insured, so 'free' for the patient) with a prescription.

Very strange indeed, that there is so much confusion about it.

Is it not administered to infants in the US? As far as I know, young children here get it to combat sickness.

Hale's rule is: if it is okay for kids, mom can take it while breastfeeding.

(Very late reaction... there were so many unread messages... I'm catching up! ;-))

Dear Friends: Wight, the neonatologist, told LACTNET that her insurance company would not insure her group practice if anyone prescribed this drug.A physician from Nebraska (Kathy Leeper?) described on LACTNET the legal challenges and hassle that she went through when the FDA went after her.You can check in the Archives of LACTNET for details. Or write to these physicians. For whatever reason, this drug is a big deal in the US and we who practice here need to be aware of the situation.warmly,Nikki Lee

Just curious, here in the U.S., " OTC " means that you don't need a prescription.

Are you saying in the Netherlands OTC means WITH a prescription but no limits on

amounts received?

(My husband's mother and sisters were all born there.)

Aaahhh, sorry... I see now that my message could be understood in different ways. I'll clear up. ;o)

Your doctor can prescribe it. He will decide how much you need for now and then you can pick it up in the pharmacy with the prescription he wrote you and it will be paid for by the health insurance.

You can also buy it OTC, together with liquorice and formula and adhesive plaster and a cream for your hands and ibuprofen and then you can take as much as you like from every single item, but... you will then have to pay the whole bill. Therefore, if you feel you have a good reason to use domperidone, you'd better check with your doctor, because then you don't have to pay. Like someone else said: it can add up, if you need it for a longer period. If you don't want the hassle (like I didn't, when I tried to relactate for my deadly ill father in 2004, hoping I might prevent him from dying from NEC by offfering him my milk per tube... didn't have enough time, unfortunately... he died shortly after and the doctors probably wouldn't have allowed me anyway...), you can just spend the money and see if it works.

Does this answer your question...? :-)

Where were your relatives born? I'm in Assen, in the north of the country.

Hi All,My favorite pharmacy in the UK, inhousedrugs.com is gone from the internet. I have been referring to them for years. Do any of you use a New Zealand source for Domperidone? Or what other sites are you using outside of the US for Dom.Thanks so much,StarStar Siegfried RN,BA,IBCLCBoard Certified Lactation ConsultantThe Nursing Centre317 Third St, Eureka, CA 95521http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/humboldtbaybaby/http://www.facebook.com/pages/Eureka-ca/The-Nursing-Centre/185668856008?v=info

Hi and all,

We have a compounding pharmacy that has been compounding Dom for years. They

must love us LC's as we bring them good business. The big problem with this is

cost. They sell Dom for much more then Inhouse does. What i usually do is have

the HCP write the first prescription to be compounded at our local pharmacy to

keep the HCP in the loop. If the Domperidone is working then I give moms the UK

info to save money.

I am very relieved that Inhouse is still a good option for our gals.
