Wierd thoughts triggering unwanted behaviors

Does anyone have techniques to use with children when typical wierd thoughts

trigger anxiety or unwanted behaviors? For example

if our daughter sees something usual outdoors she will be worried

about it until she can tell me about it. I have to normalize it for her to let

it go. But I didn't give her a technique to cope with it on her own.

Other times if she finds my behavior wierd (usually a motion of my hands) she

will say that motion is wierd and even if I stop immediately she will hit me for

not preventing the wierd motion. In this case I cannot calm her worry, if I try

to talk about why the motion got her so upset she continues to be angry that I

do wierd things. She has to distract herself to let it go.

I did read that some people with OCD will let normal wierd

thoughts overly upset themselves.

I have not just directly said that is a wierd thought just let it go. I expect

that would not be enough for her deep thinking and just get her more upset.

thanks for any insight,

Pam
