Guest guest
If she calls up some pharmacies, she should probably be able to find gentian violet of the proper dilution. Someone told me she got it at a Wal-Mart. It just might not be out on a shelf -- not a big seller. When you say she's been " treated " for yeast, do you mean that she's had a long course of Diflucan? Has she tried other topical antifungals, such as lotrimin? Maybe something like the OTC version of Newman's Triple Nipple cream would be useful -- West's handout on that is in this group's homepage's " Files " Are you sure that it's yeast? Thrush is so tricky to diagnose, and the symptoms overlap with so many other problems. (The Triple-Nipple approach probably came about out of such frustrations) I know that yeast can make the skin fragile, but I don't tend to associate bleeding nipples with yeast (though that early post-partum damage may have opened things up to infection). One mother I worked with finally got rid of long-standing, mysterious breast pain with a strict anti-yeast diet. (There's lot on the Web about this, since some people do battle vaginal yeast for a long time. But like any health information on the Web, it might take some sorting to find a reputable version of it. I believe there are a couple of books that have a good reputation.) Are you reasonably certain that it's not something in the latch or the " fit " between these two that's causing the pain? Did the pain go away when she was only pumping, and return with the baby at the breast? Margaret Wills
Guest guest
I agree with Lyla--even if it is thrush--I often see resistant cases resolve almost overnight once the posterior tongue-tie (PPTT) is clipped. Things I do not ever encourage--diflucan, nystatin and GV. " Watching diet " may not mean much--IMO, 100% sugar, simple carb and cow milk elimination (in all its forms) is needed. No yogurt, unless it is coconut milk yogurt. Probiotocs need to be taken by mom and baby for far longer than a week. I like 3-lac for mom if the candida is really resistant--a 3 month supply. I have been using biotin b/c biotin deficiency allows the yeast form of candida to convert to the fungal form. Adult dosage is 1000mcg 3-4X per day. 5 mcg per day is the standard infant dose. Also, have mom use only coconut or olive oil for cooking and take EFAs (essential fatty acids) for gut healing. Do not purchase probiotics or any other supplement at department stores or such--get them at a health food store or order them on-line. A high fiber diet helps the body eliminate the toxic die-off from the candida. I suggest using flax or salba seeds ground and added to food. Ultimately gut healing should then be addressed. Topically for healing, I use colloidal silver spray followed by coconut oil. I also use calendula for some moms. Guest guest
Thank you all for your suggestions. They have definitely got candidiasis infection as I examined them, as well as their ped and OB. So it is -not impossible- little unlikely that one of us would miss if it was something else. I am usually very careful about the frenulums as I used to clip them as a surgeon. They have used diflucan as well as topical AF creams, and as a general rule I do not like any thing else either than breast milk passing through infants gut before about 6 mnts. Especially if you think the synthesis of df in the body, I sometimes wonder thrush or liver, thrush or kidneys... This may be my own bias so like I do not like to encourage moms to take it, unless it is the last resort. At this point I am little puzzled and thinking if there is a secondary infection and yeast and bacteria working against each other. Then again there is that little unpleasant thought on the back of my mind; " does she really do all the things we talk about? " As it is a hard work two babies under the age of 2... Anyway I am thinking out loud now so I probably suggest the mom, Tripple cream and more strict diet and try to find GV -as our local Walmart decided they do not carry nor order any longer - Once again thank you all very much for giving me different perspectives. Kindly Ann Faust -- Mother's milk is the normal food for human babies.
