Guest guest
Hi everyone, Our 12 year old son was recently diagnosed with OCD. He also has ADHD and RAD (Reactive Attachment Disorder). He was adopted a little over 2 years ago. My question is how do we effectively parent an OCD child? We are using parenting techniques that help the ADHD and the RAD however I am at a loss as to what to do for the OCD. Every day my husband and I suffer from what could be called 'battle fatigue'. He just drains our energy so quickly. The compulsion to clean anything and everything drives us nuts! What techniques can be used to re-direct him from cleaning? He claims he's 'bored' and there isn't anything to do. Thinks every day should be fun and he should be constantly active. We are all walking on eggshells at the moment because we don't know when or what will set this child off into an 'episode'. I'd like to know what our school can be doing. Although the teachers claim they don't see at school what we see at home, it has to be effecting him. He's still having difficulty making friends and socializing. He doesn't seem to pick up on social cues he's given. How can we help him recognize these social cues? Additionally, we noticed as his symptoms got worse his grade tanked. I'm convinced they're related but I have no clue what the teachers can do to help. Any advice, or if you can point me to an archive, would be helpful. Thanks Cheryl
