Guest guest
Hi and dad, welcome! This group has been my greatest support over the years, hope you find that to be true for you too! I have a son (1 of 3) with OCD, and also Aspergers Syndrome. He's 20 now, his OCD began back at the start of 6th grade and I joined this group soon after. There are other parents here who also have the BP diagnosis for their child. Seems for some kids medication for both disorders can be a " very delicate balance, " like the meds for BP might aggravate the OCD and vice-versa. Have you found that to be the case for your son? Have you always homeschooled or did that begin after the BP, OCD problems? There are others here who homeschool, maybe you can find some motivation tips for that, though the teen years do seem to be " big " for playing video games, etc. My sons are now ages 20 (twins) and 24 and I remember the games they used to love to play. Luckily they finally aged past that " obsession " so there is hope! (Ahem, there were a few I loved to play too. So maybe it isn't all " age " related!) Do you think any of his playing might be that it's an escape from the OCD bothering him? What are some of his OCD behaviors? When 's OCD first " erupted " it was lots and lots of compulsions, rituals. Some pretty weird, LOL. We got past that eventually (and thankfully) but OCD began in a new way later and " bad thoughts " began, mainly the scrupulosity/religion type and that is still what he deals with. He refuses meds this time. Don't worry about your post, it was fine. I tend to ramble a lot in mine too! single mom, 3 sons , 20, with OCD, dysgraphia and Aspergers > > Hi, everyone, > I'm and I just found this group today. DH and I are parents to one 14 year old boy with Bipolar & OC Disorders, as well as ADD. > DS has been under treatment for BP and OCD for three years, and had had them for at least a year before we first got treatment. He had a meltdown and started talking about wanting to die (he was ten or eleven at the time). We took him to the ER at a local hospital
Guest guest
My daughter has Asperger Syndrome and I too see a big jump in contamination fears and anxiety/panic after an illness (especially with a prolonged fever). My daughter is not on medication but we are getting evaluations in place for her at well known children's hospital. This anxiety increase may just be do to her feeling more vulnerable and fatigued and she seems unable to cope with anything stressful. There is a definate trigger for us. I know this is not PANDAS type OCD. Pam
Guest guest
There are many children who are misdiagnosed as OCD, ADHD, Bipolar, anxiety disorder, conduct disorder, and even schizophrenic who ACTUALLY have PANDAS and respond very well once they are finally put on antibiotics. Typically these children have negative reactions to psychiatric meds. I am just posting this to raise awareness that PANDAS is very much undiagnosed. I am not saying this applies to anyone here, but wanted to post in case. Guest guest
Pam, I don't want to put you on the defensive, and I know you are aware of PANDAS and feel this doesn't apply to you. I certainly don't want to come across like I know anything about your child. But I had the same reaction that Colleen did. Any time I hear that illness is a definite trigger, I think PANDAS/PITANDS. PITANDS is triggered by any infection, bacterial or viral - not limited to strep. I'm not trying to push a label you feel doesn't fit. But I had to chime in. If you're discounting PANDAS because there's no strep, you may want to research PITANDS - same symptoms but a wider range of infectious triggers. Treatment is not necessarily the same for the autoimmune disease as it is for the " classic " psychiatric disorders. Just might be worth a second look. Best of luck with the children's hospital... > > > > My daughter has Asperger Syndrome and I too see a big jump in contamination fears and anxiety/panic after an illness (especially with a prolonged fever). Guest guest
Thanks for the post - So how in the world do you know? We got a Pandas diagnosis at 3, and then remission for 3 years. Now back with a vengence - always sudden, and always after exposure to illness - but no strep, nothing that anyone can see - she has high ANA levels, but everything else comes back in normal range. We even checked out Lupus, but nothing there. I am curious, since you seem to be knowledgable about it. We have not tried any meds, as she is pretty good at working with therapy, but it still steals a lot of her time while it is at it's worst. Thanks for posting, I'm not sure if we'll ever figure this out, but must admit that we still have that tickle in our minds about the connection with illness. Guest guest
Children with PANDAS often show NO physical symptoms whatsoever of strep and they have completely normal strep titers, so physicians and parents don't think to do a throat culture. Many children with PANDAS have untreated strep and the only manifestation of the strep is behavioral symptoms (anxiety, OCD, tics, oppositional behaviors, rages). I would highly recommend that throat cultures be done on ANY child with any of these symptoms. Once there has been the initial immune system reaction to strep, subsequent behavioral symptoms can occur with any bacterial infections and/or during viral illnesses. Other PANDAS symptoms are the following(you don't have to have all the symptoms- some kids have only a few): dilated pupils, ANY change in urinary patterns (frequency, urgency, wetting bed, having daytime accidents), night time difficulties (nightmares, night terrors, separation anxiety (won't sleep alone), behavioral regression(baby-talk, temper tantrums, separation anxiety), aggressiveness, hyperactivity and/or loss of concentration(looks like ADHD/ADD), deterioration in learning abilities (specifically loss of math skills and handwriting skills), possibility of hallucinations and eating disorder(fear of choking), unexplainable GI complaints, increased sensory response (tactile, smell, light). AFTER reading this list you can see why SO MANY children are diagnosed with many different psychiatric illnesses. It is crucial to rule out PANDAS in children b/c it is imperative that they be on antibiotics. Colleen > > Thanks for the post - So how in the world do you know?
