i hate this when nathan does this, he will with things he likes --like pizza

or sandwhiches or burgers--he chiokes pretty often i just remind him little

bites, slow down, he gets mad at me occasionally and will perposely take a

big bite just to @#$@#$ me off ,lol, while looking at me to see if he gets a

reaction out of me. sometimes just cutting his food up in bite size portions

helps, but not always. i am interested in seeing what others say. shawna

Holly, Tori has always done this. I used to have to give her just 1 piece of

something at a time. She has gotten a little better, but other times we have to

stop her.

shoveling food

Any thoughts on kids shoveling food in their month, or stuffing their mouth.

Jake just started this and it is driving me nuts.

Holly,

Ashton shovels, had shoveled forever...... I finally got inventive and gave

your a baby fork to eat with......it's smaller and it takes longer and she has

to pay attention to getting food on it......chopsticks are great too and she

loves using them plus it builds eye hand coordination and fine motor

skills.......she is actually pretty good with them..... just an idea.......good

luck

Add to this I always have to monitor him or his food intake or

he will stuff his mouth or choke.

We all just make sure that they are small bite size on what he eats.

Same thing when drinking from a bottle water never comes up for air,

just guzzles it down, always have to tell him to slow down, stop,

break, whatever works.

Elie doesn't choke, but we make sure the food is in small pieces like for a

kindergartener. He gets a grip on his implement, puts his head down and

shovels. We call the grip the farmer's fist grip. Not to insult farmer's

but I saw that as a descriptor in aan old OT book and it stuck in my mind.

The only thing he chokes on is gummy fruit wrap and gummy candies - which we

NEVER give him, but some times he gets it at school. the fruit wrap sticks

to his high palate and he can't breath. We have written a medical note on

this.

I used visuals " one bite " " chew " " swallow " . It helped. Now when

Sophie puts in too much food we just remind her verbally. She doesn't

like being told (growls at us!) but complies.

Well, does this too! When he first learned to use the spoon and fork he

did SO well,

and even was using the fork for a bit.. then one day.. he was probably 4 or 5 he

learned

that if he got his chin close enough and he scooooooooped... (shovel at best),

it worked

better. And lazy mommy and daddy never really addressed it. We find that making

sure he

is NOT level with the table helps. So we use a booster so he has to sit up more

and not

just be right there at the bowl or plate. I know depending on the teacher in the

past, they

will do a physical cue on his forehead to keep him back. But, we've had so many

teachers

in the past few years they all haven't been consistant.

My thing is getting to use a fork properly again...since shoveling is

easier, he does

it with the fork too. He use to do well with a verbal prompt... POKE.... but

nope.. won't

now.

Good luck Holly!!!

I know that some times Jake does it to eat fast so he can leave. We spent last

night sitting at the table getting him to even take a bite. Let me tell you,

this has never happened! Jake always eats.

1. He shovels, meaning he puts his mouth near the plate or bowl and shovels

food in. We can usually stop this with prompts but a lot of times it depends

on what he is eating. Soft foods are more likely to make him do this.

2. She stuffs food in his mouth to the point of almost choking. This is the

part that is new. This is what I think he is doing to finish quick since he

knows he has to finish before he can leave the table. also, he had fries in the

car the other day (which he has done all these years) and when it was time to

get out, instead of taking the rest of the fries.....he shoved them all in his

mouth. I had to pull fries out of his mouth. This is new also. At first I was

like, " are you crazy! "

One big accomplishment in our car is that Jake is buckling his seat belt. Of

course only when he wants to!

stubborn stinker!

Holly,

Mark is still doing this at age 17. We just keep reminding him to " slow

down " . Any ideas why they do this?

yes i dont get the chug the drink down thing either, nathan will do this and

take a big breath when done, eyes watering sometimes. He has gotten brain

freeze a few times. i find using the smaller glasses or using straw helps

prevent this. shawna
