So.. when are WE as parents going to go to our lawmakers to have laws written specifically to protect our people with autism? we have the amber alert..megan's law.... or we can sit here and read more stories like this and just shake our heads... Lia

This is so sad and troubling, because the boy's grandparents are doing the right thing. Most of us are knowledgeable about functional behavioral assessments and safety plans in individual education plans. What don't these folks (at Zakh's school board) understand, or want to understand, that which the rest of us see as clear as day? It isn't all that difficult to put two and two together,....

Sorry,

I neglected to add, that once functional behavioral assessments and safety plans are actually implemented for a child with ASD (or whatever problem), they can make a huge difference for the child and others who deal with him/her. I went through this with my youngest son when he was in Grade 3 and was receiving very little additional support at school. He would go out of his way to act badly in class to get out of staying in uncomfortable (to him) situations. He could not easily function in a "regular" classroom with several other misbehaving kids nearby. He would rather swear and be sent home, than stay in class, during those years.

It took a few years, but we finally realized that sending our son to smaller "home school class" environments would be beneficial for him. It worked then, and is still working now that he is in high school. I hope that Zakh's advocates can see it through, to ensure that he gets the extra support that he seems to need. I know that it was a losing battle fight to try and get my own son an aide in elementary school. We did not qualify, because my son was not enough of a danger to himself or others, because he did not make enough of an effort to escape his Kindergarten class, even though he did slip out of the room and his teacher's sight several times. Let me rephrase this, my son could have easily qualified for extra help, but the bastards at my school board declined us, even though he had his Kindergarten Teacher, including the rest of us, worried silly.

All the best to Zakh, and all who are helping him,

I sincerely wish you all the best,

Aasa

Two years ago, while in 5th grade at the intermediate school, my son (an Aspie) threw a pencil at a teachers aide while having a melt down due to being in the BD class. This was not part of his IEP but they kept insisting that this classroom was a great respite for him when he was overloaded. He was in the mainstream program with an aide. His aide was having a soda when the incident occured and they called the police and charged him with assault. They had us reporting to a probation officer weekly and paying a probation fee. They threatetened to prosecute him for a felony if I didn't accept the probation program. I ended up calling the Public Defender for the county who has a son on the spectrum

and he made a few calls on our behalf and they dropped the charges. But up until that point it seemed that there was no where for me to turn. I contacted an agency here in Illinois called Equip for Equality but they told me they couldn't help me in a criminal matter. On another note, the staff at the intermediate school had matted him

chest down several times last year and I filed a formal complaint with

Equip For Equality and to date nothing has come of it. It seems there

is no justice for our kids and everything that they do within the school system is

justified, protected or swept under the carpet.I was prepared to home school him this year but the principal of the junior high called and requested that we give him a chance in the new school. She agreed that he would never be brought to the BD room or matted in her school. This year, he is mainstreamed with an aide (a different person) and off all of his meds. He is on a very high quality fish oil and doing very well. He is maintaining straight A's, is on student council and was elected their version of Homecoming King! This all validates that he is not a bad kid or the criminal that they were making him out to be!With kind regards,Gail Venegaswww.workathomeunited.com/gvenegasTo: EOHarm Sent: Sun, January 3, 2010 8:16:10 PMSubject: Re: Yet another example of School District abuse
