One of the reasons that many people look at ABA and then do not use it is

because of the impression of the structure. But the structure has to have

some elasticity in it for the human benefit. I think you are right ,

that behavior will escalate in the face of harrassment. This doesn't mean

that one has to " give in " . It does mean that one sometimes has to back off

and give a human person (not a robot) time to regroup.

We have in Elie's behavior plan that a request is made of him briefly and

repeated over a fiveminute period. If he does not comply, he is told that

he needs to comply with the request - when he is ready to make a good

choice. Then he is left alone!!!! He gets to chose - has some control. He

can comply and then get to do what he wants to do. OR he can chose to give

them the " flying finger of fate " (figuratively of course) and make a bad

choice. But it his to make.

The same with talking. One can encourage, help shape the word, show the

child how to form the mouth. But ultimately, only the child can decide to

do what is asked of him.

Sara - Choose to make lemonade, not complain about the lemons.
