Any sort of exercise is great for the kids....especially if they have low muscle tone. My son has never enjoyed the water, but loves football, soccer, basketball, etc. As for speech, my son (who is 18) had very little speech for years. When he was ten, he was put on Risperdal and Luvox for behavioral issues. His speech started to come after that. He's not a big talker, 4-5 word sentences, and he stutters pretty bad when he tries to talk longer sentences. I know that when my son was younger, he always wanted the 'closed caption' on for the TV. He would learn/read the words along with the cartoon he was watching. In 1st grade, he could read a sentence in a book by looking at the words, but could not turn around and say that sentence without looking at the words. He needed to see the words to talk.
