Guest guest
Welcome Pamala, I am Laurie Mom to Mic I have Mic in an ABA school and is doing very well. He didnt eat food for the last 3 years and lost all his words thats when we discovered asd. Now after a year and 1/2 he has a few words and is eating some foods. And has alot more eye contact and way more social. Still doesnt play with toys and dangles everything he can but we are making progress.Joan owner of this group could help you with diet, I know alot of kids get better with diet I cant use diet yet we are just beginning to get Mic to eat later I will turn his diet when hes eating enough to sustain. right now he gets pediasure which he lived on for 3 years and thats it vanila only ,now the shool has him eating yogurt pudding and a few babyfoods nothing with texture though. Mic had surgery for reflux and I think that had something to do with his aversion to food.Youll find alot of support here its we are like one big cyber family. Guest guest
I just recently joined the group too and I also have a son with Down syndrome. He is 4 and we are pretty sure he also has autism. Is your son doing anything in addition to the head banging? I would love to talk to you more-please email me anytime. Mi@.... Were you at the NDSC convention last weekend in Atlanta? Take care and try not to worry-if your son does end up getting a dual diagnosis there is a lot out there to help him. Next summer we are taking Lincoln to Children's Therapy Works in Georgia for a three week intensive program that has done wonders for kids with autism and they have also worked with children who have DS. ________________________________ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of tammy Sent: Thursday, July 27, 2006 6:37 AM To: Subject: Re: Hello I am new to the group.... introduction! ---Hi, My son just turn 1 yr old and has down syndrome. Guest guest
Tammy: I would check out the Autism checklist and see how well your little one fits it's criteria. I think it is posted at our site. If not, check out www.disabilitysolutions.org . There are several documents available to read...one specifically geared toward the dual dx. Liz-Mom to Tori 6.5 yrs. Guest guest
Our one dietary issue with Jake is cows milk. We find that his Autistic traits come screaming out within 20 minutes of having milk or yogurt. He used to love mac and cheese but since we have restricted his milk to just an occasional ice cream, he never seems to want the mac and cheese. It is almost like he knows. We have him on soy milk, soy yogurt, and when we can soy ice cream. Holly Hello I am new to the group.... introduction! Guest guest
Holly, I am new to the group. My 4 year old son has Down syndrome and we are 99.9% sure he is also autistic. I started him on soy milk yesterday because I also heard that cow's milk can be hard on these guys. Have you eliminated all dairy? My son loves pizza and this we know is full of dairy because of the cheese. Love to hear your thoughts. Also, are there national autism conventions like there are DS conventions? ________________________________ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Holly Giglio Sent: Thursday, July 27, 2006 9:55 AM To: Subject: Re: Hello I am new to the group.... introduction! Guest guest
: Alot of kids with autism are gluten and casein sensitive. Families whose children are affected by this swear by a gf-cf diet. There is a test for this. Liz Hello I am new to the group.... introduction! I am Pamela single MOM to 4 wonders! 16, Charissa 10 Chanysse 5 and Jezeriah 10 months. Guest guest
Liz, What does the test entail? Do I have to go to a specialist or can my pediatrician do it? ________________________________ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of Liz D Sent: Thursday, July 27, 2006 12:07 PM To: Subject: Re: Hello I am new to the group.... introduction! : Alot of kids with autism are gluten and casein sensitive. Guest guest
: Celiac is usually handled by a Gastroenterologist. I can't remember how the test was done (it was a few years ago). I am sure someone else on this site can answer that. Liz Hello I am new to the group.... introduction! I am Pamela single MOM to 4 wonders! 16, Charissa 10 Chanysse 5 and Jezeriah 10 months. Guest guest
Hi , That's all I've noticed so far. Really, I'm basicly on my own, I knew of no conventions. It's very difficult for me to get out, you see, I have 3 other children, and work full time. Tammy wrote: I just recently joined the group too and I also have a son with Down syndrome. Guest guest
Hi , I am falling behind on my correspondence. I apologize. We actually allow Jake to have pizza because it is one of his favorite foods. The funny thing is that we do not notice the behaviors as much with cheese, just milk and yogurt, and ice cream. We also let him have a little real ice cream here and there. Luckily, he likes the soy ice cream as well. We usually use the Tofutti ice cream. We use Silk or Natures Best soy milk, and silk yogurts. Also, we try to use organic everything when available. Jake really likes this juice called VRUIT. It is juice made from organic fruits and veggies but it taste like fruit juice. We get it at Whole Foods. He loves it! He is just now starting to eat more fresh fruits and veggies. There are Autism conventions and the past DS conventions have had speaker son dual diagnosis. I think more people are becoming aware that just because their kids have DS does not mean they are except from possible Autism. We pretty much knew when Jake was about 3. We did not get our diagnosis until last year. This list serve is one of the best. I love that everyone can voice their opinions without feeling assaulted. this is a wonderful group for ideas and guidance. Where are you located? We are in PA. We also lived in MI, AL and I was born/raised in TX. Crazy! Talk to you soon. Holly Hello I am new to the group.... introduction!
