Guest guest
Hello Everyone!! Thanks to all the support and advice I received here and in other places, I meet with my plastic surgeon and I scheduled an explantation with a capsulectomy on December 7th. Boy aren't those plastic surgeons negative towards the possibility of implants making people sick!! Anyway, I hope that this step brings me closer to the road to recovery!! Thanks, Charlene

Guest guest
Debbie, I have taken Effexor for 7 yrs now. I went on it for major depression, and after trying every other antidepressant, Effexor was the last one I tried, and turns out it's the only one that works for me. It is in a class of antidepressants called SNRI (selective norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor). This means that it works more on norepinephrine than serotonin. It still does have some activity on serotonin, though. Many people have a hard time with Effexor. The majority of the complaints I hear are that it makes them very " jittery " and unable to sleep. It does have activating properties, can cause insomnia, and can cause headaches. In addition, it can cause increased heart rate and blood pressure. Most docs will (and should) start you off at 37.5mg, and gradually increase the dose until you have the desired affect. I have been on doses as low as 37.5mg and as high as 350mg. It is a drug that you cannot just stop. You MUST slowly taper the dosage over a period of 2-4 wks. It can cause withdrawal symptoms such as dizziness, headache, nausea and vomiting, vertigo, sweating, and tingling. I have gone off it several times just to see if I would be able to function w/o out--i.e., to see if my depression was stable enough to not need to take it. I think in the 7 yrs I've been on it, I've stopped it about 5-6 times (but always needed to go back on it). Actually, I have stopped it again. I took my last dose last Thurs. I did a fairly rapid taper this time, so now I am dealing with vertigo. It should be abating some time soon. All said, Effexor is an excellent drug. It is also the only antidepressant FDA approved to treat GAD (generalized anxiety disorder). Research has also found that SNRI's are proving to be more effective in treating depression than SSRI's. There are 2 forms of Effexor available. There is the the original Effexor, available in 25mg, 37.5mg, 75mg, and 150mg, and then there is Effexor XR, or the extended release, which keeps more of a constant level of venlafaxine (generic name)in your body. It is available in the same strenghts except 25mg. Please let me know if you need any more info or have any more questions. I have done lots of psych nursing and subscribe to several psychiatric medical journals. e > > Has anyone ever had any experience with effexor...Good or bad? > Thanks Debbie>>>>>>>>>> > criviezzi@... wrote: Hello Everyone!! > > Thanks to all the support and advice I received here and in other > places, I meet with my plastic surgeon and I scheduled an > explantation with a capsulectomy on December 7th. > > Boy aren't those plastic surgeons negative towards the possibility of > implants making people sick!! > > Anyway, I hope that this step brings me closer to the road to > recovery!! > > Thanks, > Charlene > > >

Guest guest
Great news, Charlene! Glad to hear the ball is rolling! How do you feel about your surgeon? Totally comfortable? You must have run into quite a few comments regarding the implants and disease idea--how does this one feel about it? Make sure you show him some of our articles if there is the need. Guest guest
Patty, Where should I start? How about " implants don't make woman sick. " " You won't be happy if you take them out. " " 99.9% of woman who take them out don't feel any better. " Maybe you should exercise!! That's about a few of the comments! I'm telling you if some concerned woman went in there thinking that she was getting sick from her implants he would have convinced her of the exact opposite. However, he did say that it was my choice and if I did want them out it was not a problem. He gave me three options: 1. extract the saline out of the implant and leave the implant in (ha!) 2. extract the implant 3. extract the implant with a capsulectomy (he really wasn't crazy about this idea) I told him that I know that up until the implants I had absolutely no health problems and since then I have been in and out of doctors. I told him I wanted it all out implant and capusle and as soon as possible!! I am confident in his surgical technique because my results from implants were great especially since I had very difficult breasts to work with. They were tubular breasts. So, he had to reshape them, lift them, and implant them. Also, I spoke to numerous people who assured me he is an excellent surgeon! Anyhow, I'm glad to have these things out in 6 weeks but I have to admit I'm a little bit concerned about what my breasts will look like. He did tell me that because he did reshape them, they would look different than previously (better) but they would be flat. Actually, I'm really not too concerned because what I'm most concerned about is my health. I will be visiting Dr. Kolb soon so that she can set me up on a detox program. Guest guest
Hi Charlene, I cannot believe that this doctor even offered the first option you listed!!! Oh my God! What person in their right mind would leave a lump of deflated silicone rubber in their breasts, for God's sake!!!! That is so scary, it boggles my mind. I am not at all surprised by the other comments. Really, sometimes I wonder what kind of perverted medicine these doctors think they are practicing. I know you are looking forward to the explant--I well remember my own impatience at being able to remove the cursed things from my chest, but at the same time it is scary. I am sure you are going to look fine. You sound like you trust this man enough to be at peace and content with his skill as a surgeon, and that is important. Just get it in writing that he will do a complete capsulectomy...if you ask for it in writing, he will know you are dead serious about it. I've personally known a woman who was promised a total capsulectomy but didn't get one, and only found out about it 6 months after her surgery when she examined her post operative report. I guess the doctors figure we are too dumb to know the difference if they don't do it, so that is why you don't let them get off the hook that easy. Let him know you know what you are talking about, and you expect him to perform the surgery that you are requesting. geez, drain the saline and leave the implant in...what insanity. Guest guest
Charlene, Request in writing that this ps remove your implants using the en bloc technique. And make sure you get it in writing!! Any doc who suggest removing the saline only scares me!! But if you trust him, that is what is impt! e > Patty, > > Where should I start? > How about " implants don't make woman sick. " " You won't be happy if you take > them out. Guest guest
Debbie, I really think that Effexor is a superior drug to the others out there. If you are considering taking it for mild depression, you probably won't need a large dose, and therefore may not have the potential side effects. When I first started taking it, I was a little " activated, " but it didn't last long, and my body adjusted to it fairly quickly. I have a history of PVC's, bigeminy, and trigeminy, and the Effexor didn't make it worse or even aggravate it. I also have a history of bradycardia and a junctional rhythm, and again, it wasn't exacerbated by the Effexor. However, since you have SVT, I would be sure to discuss it w/ your doc. Just out of curiosity, have you tried any of the SSRI's, such as prozac, zoloft, paxil, celexa? Or have you tried wellbutrin or serzone? e > > e, > Thanks for the reply...trying to decide if I want to go on this drug to help > with minor dep. I am sensitive to meds and do not like taking them. Guest guest
e, I tried zoloft before I had my implants out..this is when many thought all of my symptons were in my head. I had only seen a doctor for my psvt and having my children. I needed the zoloft, because I was depressed over feeling sick and tired of people thinking I was nuts...sooooo frustrating. The many people that didn't believe me felt pretty bad when I had the implants out and the cultures came back positive for staph. Bad feelings for the people that thought my sickness was mental...THEY MADE ME EMOTIONALLY DEPRESSED! Anyway, getting back to the point; I am not sure if I had any side effects or if my symptons were from my infected implants. I only took the drug for 5 weeks and decided to stop it. Klonapin helped a great deal with the anxiety...I took it for 3 months until I got implants out. All anxiety went away! My doc thinks this drug would be a good one for me. Zoloft did make me soooooooooooooooooo hungry all of the time...that is one side effect that I forgot about. It was aweful to be hungry 24 hrs a day. I am not at all over weight but if I would have continued on that one I would be a cow by now. Debbie Hope you are feeling better! eRene@... wrote: Debbie,I really think that Effexor is a superior drug to the others out there.
