Guest guest
Hi, Everyone.......Welcome to the group. I agree with the other responses. You will need to advocate for your daughter. The autism may require a whole different teaching method compared to a 'normal' DS kid. I am concerned as to why your daughter is being placed in a spec.ed K and not placed with the normal kids for peer support/modelling behaviors. Obviously, your school doesn't believe in least restrictive enviroments. Should a Dr agree with the autism label, it will become your daughter's primary dx if she rec's it...whether the school likes it or not. That is where the issues will arise (sensory issues to noises, lights, etc). Legally, they can not deny your child a place in the Autism support classroom just because she is DS. My son is 18 and was dx'd as severely autistic at age six, yet like many kids on this site, he has learned to read, write and do basic math. Does your daughter talk and does she have behavioral and/or sensory issues? When my son was dx'd, there were not supports in place for early intervention of the autistic behaviors....now a days there are and if your daughter is autistic, you NEED to address the autism. A 'normal' DS kid doesn't qualify for wrap around services, respite, or TSS services in Pa.....autistic kids do. Her PC can document it if he/she agrees or a child psychologist/psychiatrist can. I am not sure, but I think it's Fla that requires the 'Autism' label and not the PDD label for services. Sherry....is that correct? Good luck and welcome to the group. Take care, Everyone.
