Hi Kris,

There are door alarms that seem to work very well. At one time it was an issue

in my household. I have deadbolts that I can lock with a key from inside the

house. The drawback to that was having to walk around with a key in my pocket.

The door alarms would have alerted me that the door was open but I would have

had to persue him in the chase. I'm sure you will find something that will work

for your household.

We put contact alarms on all of our doors.(inexpesive, like the kind you put

also if you have medicaid waiver you can get them to provide safety

alarms/locks.

We also put an alarm on Trisha's bedroom door so that if she came out during

the night we would know it and could guide her back to bed. Trisha doesn't

wander too often now but as we know from the terrible scare last year at

camp the tendency is still there should something intrigue her interest.

Wel, our little escape artist is 16 now, but was a master of escape when he was

younger. We put contact alarms on all of our doors.(inexpesive, like the kind you

We aloarmed our doors very inexpensivelyt thru Radio Shack. But I saw an

alarm product from Safety First in the Baby section of K-mart that does the

same thing. You install a battery operated lock with a magnet to the top of

your door. When the door opens, it alarms. It can be set for immediate or

with a delay. I know that ELie did not like the sound of the alarm and

always looked to see if the red light was on before he would touch the door.

It is a BIG problem. I can tell you that now that Elie is almost 21, it

rarely happens, but we lived for years knowing that he would wander off.

The worst times for us were at sunrise and sunset.

We also always go to the nearest police or sherriff's office and notify them

and give them a picture so that they know this is an ongoing problem.

YOU ARE NOT A BAD MOTHER> Elie used to escape when I was in the bathroom!

Even great mothers need a few minutes a day in the bathroom!!!!

We have a alarm on our door that rings really loud when its opened. My son Adam

3 learned how to open the front door already also. I have seen different kinds

of door alarms at target. Another thing we are doing is visual signs. I have

huge stop signs on our oven and front door.

Our son Gavin is 7 and he still escapes on a regular basis!! Locking

the door no longer helps, as he has learned to unlock it quite a

while ago. We have installed the chain guards (I'm not sure of the

proper name of them) at the top of all our doors. The door still

opens slightly but not far enough for him to get out. I also saw at

our " Dollar Stores " that they have battery operated devices that are

alarms that are set off when the door is opened. We have held off on

that until he learns to pull the chair over to slide the chain off

the door. Good luck! I know how scary that is when you realize they

are out of the house.

Years ago, we put double bolt locks on the doors and Ian still got out. Then we

put chain locks on the door -- but set them so that the only way to loosen the

chain is with a key. When Ian is home for visits, we have the chain lock on.

I wish I could say that my experience has shown me that kids outgrow this

Houdini obsession, but we're still waiting.

Hi everyone,

I am home from Boston. Duff and I had such a wonderful time at his

reunion. It was wonderful to see folks we hadn't seen in years, and to

reminisce. The thing they all couldn't believe is that Joe, and

n

are now 25, 23 and 20. They were 8, 6 and 3 when we lived up there.....I'm

afraid we made everyone feel old....LOL

As for the safety issue, it's still huge with us. Like Sara, we had no

luck with the name tag idea....Maddie too, ate right through the metal. I

DID do up a little MO on her and gave it to our police department (don't

know how helpful here, living in the big city, but it was something I could

do).

We have FIVE exit doors on our first floor, so it's a real worry. I

have those child handles on our doors....the ones you have to squeeze the two

buttons together to open it....so far, she hasn't figured it out. Matter of

fact, most adults need our help to open them.....LOL

Welcome to all newcomers who may have joined while I was away. Looking

forward to *getting to know you*.

You're lucky with the child handles Donna. Seth figured it out in less than

3 minutes. Course, his Dad still hasn't gotten it. LOL
