Interesting you should mention OCD...I've been noticing some 'strange' behavior

from my 4 year old the past couple of weeks that I'm beginning to think may be

OCD related!??

At meal times, after every bite, he either has to slap his face with his right

hand if he doesn't like the bite of food he was offered. Sometimes he hits his

face so hard, he cries. OR, he'll tap the table with his left hand (and make a

'good sound' if he does like the food.

The weird thing is (as if that's not weird enough) that most often he signs for

the food we're offering him. So, it's not like we're forcing him to eat

something he doesn't like. He'll ask for it and then get mad and hit himself

because he really doesn't want it or like it.

I've ignored since it started, hoping it would diminish. Today, I tried

something new. I actually stopped his hand from either slapping his face, or

tapping the table. That made him really mad! He 'fought' me each time and

screamed because he couldn't slap or tap!

This is so new...and I'm not sure how to handle it!!! It definitely makes meal

times frustrating....for him and me!

Any ideas what to do?

OCD/meds

I had to share with you what a friend's DS-Aut son who is about 9 or ten is

doing now. We were talking about OCD issues and she mentioned that he has just

started going down on one knee as if to be knighted or something before he eats,

or goes to school, or gets in the car....anything. I know it's sad but it's also

pretty funny. I asked her if she were demanding this from him now, like wearing

a tiara or something and having him call her " Queen Mum " .

This topic came up on another list as someone mentioned Trileptal (?) for OCD.

Anyone here had experience with it? It's an antiseizure drug I know. She said

her child had no side effects an all the behaviors magically disappeared.

I thought jamie might be getting over this until she had a crying meltdown

last night because dh hung a beach towel over the shower rod (the curtain and

all doors must ALWAYS be open). It's so sad. Then I heard from moms of 2 boys

who have to have all the doors closed so I'm thinking jamie may not have an easy

time of it finding a mate :-)

Regarding the GI meds you've all mentioned, Prevacid actually did help

but the doc is figuring we are in maintenance mode now and because her dose has

been so high for 4 years he's hoping that perhaps the other type med (like

Zantac or whatever) may help her without causing the nutritional problems she's

having. Let's just say I'm never too optimistic when it comes to trying her on

anything. If there's gonna be a reaction Miss wiil surely have it. The

Luvox didn't do much either one way or the other but she did develop the rare

side effect of chronic cough. sigh. I'm guessing Zantac never helped any of you

all very much? Go ahead tell me, I can take it.

Sandy: Drs recommend you ignore the self-hitting. Tori does this all the

time. The more you bring attention to it, the more they seem to do it.

This leaves out as he would like every shower curtain closed,

all towels in its placed, doors closed, & lights off. He is the

opposite.

Trisha is somewhere in=between, most of the time she wants her door closed

to her room with a few exceptions and the other doors well that has always

been a battle, if I open them to get fresh air in she will come and shut them

but the shower curtain she is just allowing me to close when we use the hand

held shower but as soon as she is finished with the hand-held then the curtain

has to come open. She prefers to sit in her room in the dark except for the

light of the T. V. and computer and she sometimes comes and turns off the

light where I am and I have to tell her to turn it back on. Wherever Trisha

originally sees things is where she wants them to go back. She is better about

the furniture now, but up until recently if I moved furniture around she

would try to move it back where it was. Although the other day I caught her

trying to " move " her computer out to the porch. (this is not a laptop

computer)

She moves everything with her when she goes on the porch and puts it in the

same order as she had it in her bedroom. I fixed the back porch for her to

play on with a small area rug and she drags her movies and her special toys

and books and lines them up the same way she does in her room. She has taken

over the porch as if it's second room for her. lol

OK so the younger boys are already taken and the older ones want to live with

all the doors closed. Hmmmmm it's gonna be a long lonely single life for Miss

Ah this is a great visual!!! LOL We're still fighting over the new clothes

hamper- I put it in her room; a little while later it is out in the living room.

She kept it in there for a whole day this week tho. Before the stroller was an

option, used to move all the furniture around in the doctor's offices; She

had to make straight rows so she could walk back and forth between the rows.

Come to think of it we used to get into appointments alot quicker before the

stroller and earphones.

Sandy, how about letting him smack something more appropriate.......the

table top, a book. Something besides his face. Seems like maybe he gets

feedback from the sound it makes? Maddie ADORES watching things fall, for

the

sound as well as the visual. Yesterday it was our giant ottoman, right

down the hall steps......she giggled hysterically afterwards.....little

bugger!!!
