Guest guest
Ali, I have taught gymnastics for the past many years and I have had classes with many kids with disabilities. The kids with DS have such flexible ability that it is a great sport for them. (you do need to make sure that their neck has been okay by a doctor for atlanto axial instability). I work the kids out....jumping jacks, sit ups, pushups, deep lunges, etc. then they also get to run, jump, climb, and swing on all the equipment. They love it. I think many sports are wonderful for our kids (as well as typical kids) as long as the activity is fun and they like it. Guest guest
I disagree with the comments, however, on confusing the labeling. If someone knows autism, like we do or hopefully a good doctor, you would not confuse an autistic child from a mentally disabled one. The Rising Autism Rates May Turn the Disorder into a National Disaster By Ellie Velinska http://www.rightpundits.com/?p=5096 Just when we were trying to get used to the autism rates of 1 in 100 kids, the American Academy of Pediatrics found that the parent-reported autism rate in US is one in every 91 children, including one in 58 boys. Autism rates are rising faster than the water levels after global warming. Only five years ago 1 in 10 000 kids were diagnosed with autism. And (as in the case of global warming) scientists are bickering over the issue: do we have real rise in autism or the cases of this spectrum disorder were always somewhere out there and we just now decided to recognize it. Before you jump at me – I am not trying to undermine autism. I take it very seriously. The cases in the severe part of the autism spectrum are real tragedies and even the mild cases take a great tall on the family emotionally and financially. So let’s talk about it. Officially, according to Centers for Disease Control , 1 in 150 eight-year-olds in the US had an autism. All children in the studies were eight-years- old because previous research has shown that most children with an autism have been identified by this age by some type of evaluation. Encouraging study came up yesterday. It shows that certain types of behavioral therapy focused on social interaction and communication may have very positive effect in the mild cases of Autism when caught at early age. Such treatments though are expensive and can cost up to $50,000 a year. The states are already overwhelmed by the cost of screenings, special education, transportation and therapy costs related to Autism Spectrum Disorders. Harvard School of Public Health study shows that caring for all people with autism over their lifetimes costs an estimated $35 billion societal cost per year. The number most likely underestimates the true costs because it does not include alternative therapies and family out-of-pocket expenses that are difficult to measure. To compare: societal cost for anxiety is estimated at around $47 billion. There are many controversies surrounding the causes and the diagnosis of autism. A slightly geeky kid and a mentally disabled kid can both be diagnosed as autistic. The disorder has so many different faces it is hard to understand why they all go under a same label. Early diagnostic is encouraged, but there is a very thin line between a boy in his “terrible two†and a boy with a mild autism. A regular kid can be labeled unnecessary for life and an autistic kid may not get attention he or she needs, because the symptoms at early age are easy to confuse with regular behaviors typical for toddlers. The cost of autism is rising. More and more families each year have to deal with a loved one diagnosed with autism. And as the science gives us mostly confusion on the issue, the rising Autism rates may turn the disorder into a national disaster. Lin Wessels Sam's MAMA (Mom on A Mission for Autism) "It was once said that the moral test of Government is how that Government treats those who are in the dawn of life, the children; those who are in the twilight of life, the elderly; and those who are in the shadows of life, the sick, the needy and the handicapped. Guest guest
You know…it’s not a new concept, from the beginning of time, scripture has been twisted, warped and taken out of context and perpetuated as something it was never spoken to mean. No exception here! God did not cause my son’s autism, (I know what caused it…many, many… MANY mercury-laden vaccines; including 2 Rhogam vaccines while inutero-1 at 11.5 weeks gestation, and the 2nd at 28 weeks gestation, coupled with the many Thimerosal preserved vaccines given while, at the same time, taking unnecessary antibiotics due to his siblings STREP etc…) God does know my limitations, therefore that’s why he so graciously gives me the grace, strength and ability to wake up and face a new day with the realities of my life, and what I have to face each day. I too do not appreciate when someone ‘flippantly’ states, “God never gives us more than we can handle!”. YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!! He didn’t ‘give’ me a son with autism, he BLESSED me with a perfectly healthy, neurotypical, milestone reaching little boy, who was by my “SHEEPITIY” stolen from me! Not over night mind you as some have experienced, but slowly and progressively piece, by uniquely created piece TAKEN…STOLEN from our family. Yes, I do love my son, I want the best for him, therefore, without God’s grace that he gives me daily…I will NEVER lose sight of getting my son back to what is a ‘recovered’ place for him! Never! It’s not about what I can handle…I cannot handle any of it, it’s only through God handling it through me that I make it to my pillow at night! I am just amazed at what my precious innocent boy has and DOES handle daily! God’s grace being daily demonstrated in front of my eyes! That’s the miracle in all of it! Guest guest
I didn't mean to come over blaming god. But I tend to get sassy to those who says those things to me. Yes I do get bitter sometimes. Over countless jobs lost because I had to leave work early because of calls from school principles and teachers, doctors appointments or calls from home because he got to out of control. Employers don't give a damn.... Yes I am bitter, but sorry if it sound like I was blaming god. I agree I blame greed for money which leds to power. For greed is a curse placed on my child and others who suffered at those responsible. Not only it has effected my son and others, but it has effected me and countless other parents and families as a whole. My child is Gods blessings, the curse was from greed To: EOHarm From: sammysouthie@...Date: Wed, 2 Dec 2009 22:40:31 +0000Subject: Re: (unknown) Chrissy, I agree! I too do not appreciate when someone ‘flippantly’ states, “God never gives us more than we can handle!â€. YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!! He didn’t ‘give’ me a son with autism, he BLESSED me with a perfectly healthy, neurotypical, milestone reaching little boy, who was by my “SHEEPITIY†stolen from me! Guest guest
I hate that particular verse as well and the many people that think it is helpful. That verse has nothing to do with the physical and emotional pain that people go through with autism.....it was meant to minister to those in temporary discomfort. At our church we love to use the verse ICor. 12:22...."On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable." Our children are indispensable!!!!! Guest guest
I'm in agreement w/ and Joe on this one...God did NOT make my son sick with autism..he didn't give my other son Asthma, or my other son some attention problems...God does NOT cause sickness....BUT He can take ANY situation the devil has put on us (or by his influences as a result of man's greed and sin) and turn it around for His glory and for our good! When my son is recovered, his life will be a testimony to other parents in my community who have all but given up on their kids and think there is no hope. Hopefully there will be other children like him as well, who will stir up these parents to DO something to help their kids and QUIT listening to all the " doctors' who say " there's nothing you can do " . 29:11 " For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope " God always had plans for my son's welfare, and plans to give him a future and plans to give him hope...MAN took that away in the form of a flu shot given while pregnant, a mercury amalgam while pregnant and labor stopping drugs while pregnant..and then if that wasn't enough...the mercury laden vaccinations and numerous rounds of antibiotics which destroyed his gut flora. My anger makes me productive.... " Be angry BUT sin not " My anger drives me forward to help my son have that " future and a hope " . My anger makes me have a strong desire to help others in my community so that not one more child has to suffer this insanity, and not one more family has to endure this hell. 1:5 (from the message Bible) " Before I shaped you in the womb, I knew all about you. Before you saw the light of day, I had holy plans for you: A prophet to the nations--that's what I had in mind for you. " God knows my son, knows what he is supposed to be like, has a destiny for him to fulfill, and one day soon, he'll become that and be returned to the way God intended for him to be. I still get poop thrown at me and I get so mad I can't even watch TV with all the drug co commercials. I get mad at the TV. How irrational is that?!? So don't be sorry, you have no reason to be. Guest guest
Beautiful! To God be the GLORY!!!!! in Jesus name Subject: Re: (unknown)To: EOHarm Date: Thursday, December 3, 2009, 8:44 AM I'm in agreement w/ and Joe on this one...God did NOT make my son sick with autism..he didn't give my other son Asthma, or my other son some attention problems...God does NOT cause sickness.... BUT He can take ANY situation the devil has put on us (or by his influences as a result of man's greed and sin) and turn it around for His glory and for our good! When my son is recovered, his life will be a testimony to other parents in my community who have all but given up on their kids and think there is no hope. Hopefully there will be other children like him as well, who will stir up these parents to DO something to help their kids and QUIT listening to all the "doctors' who say "there's nothing you can do". 29:11"For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope"God always had plans for my son's welfare, and plans to give him a future and plans to give him hope...MAN took that away in the form of a flu shot given while pregnant, a mercury amalgam while pregnant and labor stopping drugs while pregnant..and then if that wasn't enough...the mercury laden vaccinations and numerous rounds of antibiotics which destroyed his gut flora. My anger makes me productive.. .."Be angry BUT sin not"My anger drives me forward to help my son have that "future and a hope".My anger makes me have a strong desire to help others in my community so that not one more child has to suffer this insanity, and not one more family has to endure this hell. 1:5 (from the message Bible)"Before I shaped you in the womb, I knew all about you. Before you saw the light of day, I had holy plans for you: A prophet to the nations--that' s what I had in mind for you."God knows my son, knows what he is supposed to be like, has a destiny for him to fulfill, and one day soon, he'll become that and be returned to the way God intended for him to be.Lori> > > From: debra smith <dksmith9024@ ...>> Subject: RE: (unknown)> To: eoharmyahoogroups (DOT) com> Date: Wednesday, December 2, 2009, 8:28 AM> > >  > > > > What really gets my panties in a wad is when someone uses this term>>>> "God doesn't give us things we cannot handle...">  >  > My question is... whatever God gives us is a blessing aka a child, so why does it seems to be attached with a curse called "autism"?>  > >  > > > To: EOHarmyahoogroups (DOT) com> From: maurine_meleck@ yahoo.com> Date: Wed, 2 Dec 2009 06:00:51 -0800> Subject: Re: (unknown)> >  > > > > > I'm Thankful for the Broken Door>  > the poops on walls,> the principal's calls,> the right arm bites,> the sleepless nights,> the money spent> and where it went,> the nights at home,> the big, fat loan,> enormous stress,> I must be blessed,> and oh my gosh,> thank you Josh.>  > Maurine Meleck> > > > > > From: HaroldL Doherty <haroldldoherty@ yahoo.com>> To: Evidence of Harm <EoHarm@yahoogroups . com>> Sent: Wed, December 2, 2009 8:00:57 AM> Subject: (unknown)> >  > > > > > Autism Is A Blessing? Give Thanks That My Son Has A Disorder? Not A Chance> As parents of children with autism spectrum disorders we all have to learn how to come to grips with the realities of our children's autism disorders. Some do the best they can to raise their child to the best of their ability to prepare the child to live the fullest life possible. Some become fierce advocates for services, treatments, research and cures for their child and others with autism disorders. I respect most parent's approaches. One approach that I do not respect, and have never pretended to respect, is to look at my son's autism disorder as a blessing.... ...> > > The new Internet Explorer® 8 - Faster, safer, easier.
