When nothing else works at home and we HAVE to move, I end up carrying Sophie but she's already too heavy to do that. I'm more concerned with school. Her assistant has been getting flustered when visuals/singing/incentives and all the other stuff I suggest don't work. Then it turns into a battle of wills and we all know who is going to win that battle!! My feeling is to let her sit there but sometimes she has to move. What works for your kids? We have a picture schedule, but frankly sometimes she just doesn't want to move. Usually, I just wait it out and her teacher does the same....eventually she gets up. But if we're in a medical environment, we have to keep her in her stroller....there's no stop drop and flop there...ONLY RUNNING AWAY!!!!! Guest guest
i pretty much blocked those days out, ofen we would both pick him up and leave the store, then i figured out to let him pick out something and that always worked and has since, he will even request the store on occasion because he wants a game or dvd he sees on tv. also, another thing that helped was the wheel chair, some of his drop and flops was due to him not wanting to walk anymore, that has been a godsend too for outings. shawna --------------------------------- Blab-away for as little as 1¢/min. Guest guest
Tori is a BIG TIME stop, drop & flopper. Thank god we got the big stroller. When she drops-it's over. Guest guest
<< But if we're in a medical environment, we have to keep her in her stroller....>> Oh yes, us too. This has made all the difference for Dr. appointments. Mostly the staff will think she can't walk but then we tell them it is for " their " benefit that she is in the big stroller. Otherwise she used to rearrange all the furniture in all the offices to make a long passageway she could pacewalk back and forth thru (while every fourth step banging herself on the head with her favorite book " What To Do about your Brain Injured Child " . Everyone would be secretly trying to read the title of the book. The stroller has made blood draws alot better too. She feels alot safer when she is in it. I spent too many years ruining my back dragging her down hallways. Sherry
Guest guest
Lisette, was a world class flopper. We are talking Olympic Caliber. Sometimes she added a full tantrum. One time, a store employee called 911 because she thought Kate was having a seizure. Another time, after I got a hernia from hauling her off the floor of Sears when she was ten, we ended up at the behavioral specialist. They showed us how to get her off the floor without hurting ourselves or her. First always try to talk the child up, but that never worked for us. Next we place one hand behind her neck, cupping the base of her skull to keep them from throwing their head back or forward and the other under the closest elbow. Applying very slight gentle vertical pressure under the elbow, slowly guide the person to their feet. I practiced this on 's older sisters until I could do it correctly. This is really important because if you wrong you can hurt your child. If it causes any pain, you are doing it wrong. Don't yank or pull them up, your touch is to guide them so you have to give the person time to get their feet under themselves, etc. It worked for us. Now all I have to do is put a finger under her elbow and she gets up, but I can't remember the last time she did this, it does get better as they get older. We still use a wheelchair for medical stuff though. Guest guest
There was many a day when we were at the mall that Elie would dead roach. I finally eyeballed the wet floor signs as I went into the mall. Then when he flopped and the guards would tell me I was allowing a floor obstruction, I would tell him to go get the wet floor signs - I wasn't lifting a 60,70, 80 lb kid. And trying to lift him with him throwing himself backwards, was a disaster. Then we found a w/c at a yard sale. HEAVEN! No more problems. HE loved his w/c The fear of big places with lots of people which caused the behavior was gone!! Now he sometimes asks for the w/c but for the most part he walks nicely. Guest guest
That's cause he flopped to the floor on his back. Approaching rescurers were greated with wildly flailing arms and legs - what else but a " dead " roach???/ Sara - Choose to make lemonade, not complain about the lemons. > >Reply-To: >To: < > >Subject: Re: Re: Stop, drop and flop (was: Memories.....) >Date: Sun, 9 Apr 2006 23:39:10 -0400 > ><< Then when >he flopped and the guards would tell me I was allowing a floor obstruction, >I would tell him to go get the wet floor signs - I wasn't lifting a >60,70,>> > >Too Funny!!
