Guest guest
The following is a list of assistive devices that will aide in regulating his sensory, vestibular, and proprioceptive systems. The purpose is to help to modulate his behaviors through reduction of nervous system over-arousal associated with sensory processing dysfunction. In addition is benefiting from the use of communication boards, sentence strips, story boards, picture schedules, and social stories all created with Boardmaker and Writing with Symbols. List what you think needs as far as sensory and then list boardmaker and Writing with Symbols so that not only does it help in communication, short stories can be written to help him learn to read. I don't know how he does with time but you might include the need for a timer that shows the elapsed time so he can start to understand time concept. Carol Trishasmom She isn't Typical, She's Trisha! Guest guest
Jayne: Do you have a local ARC by you. I would call and ask to speak with their advocate. They may have already dealt with this type of issue. Sorry I can't be of more help. Hey, how is Mr. J doing? Liz Need ideas ASAP please Hi everyone, Sorry for the short notice but I need some help ASAP. 's school does not have Boardmaker installed on any computers - can you beleive that??? His teacher and Aide have struggled all year to try and get it installed with no luck! I say not having BM is like telling the kids they need to take the SOL's(huge yearly test for Virginia) without a pencil! His teacher broke down into tears last week because she feels like she can't get through to the district how important these materials are for her students. She spends all her time outside of school doing something for her students, she's so dedicated. She and the aide end up spending personal money to get things all the time! I stopped the Principal this morning to tell him I'd like to set up a Meeting with him, the teacher, and aide to discuss materials needed in the classroom. We're meeting today after school, it was the only day that worked this week and we have spring break next week! So my question is - Anyone have any tips or suggestions for what to say to get the materials and software that are needed for and the other students to be successful? I'm not real good with phrasing things like this. I'm definately going to start out with sugar - praising how well this year is going. (We had the year from hell last year and actually left this school and went to another which was even worse. After a shift in leadership throughout the county - we are in a great place) I worry all the time that they could take away his aide at any minute, I need to stress how perfect the fit is and how important and vital she is to his learning. She can read him perfectly, and totally " gets " him! I just want to hang on to her the rest of our time in this school, 2 years! We have the IEP later this month or early next month I think, so it's not really IEP stuff - I just want to " mention " how great things are going and the amazing strides is making! So, bottom line - Need to praise the good stuff, aim to keep the current team together, and ask for supplies in the nicest way. Also, if anyone has things they recommend we should ask the school for, software - sensory - anything, please holler! thanks guys - Jayne --------------------------------- How low will we go? Guest guest
I dont know if is in private school or not but we do fundraisers for this kind of stuff 2x a year and most of us send in school supplies.I go to the dollar store and get sensory stuff by the bags full. Alot of the stuff they use even the software is by donation.I think you are already headed in the right direction Jayne. You sound pretty convincing to me. Sounds like you have 2 dedicated people there for aka his aide and teacher. Laurie

Guest guest
Hi Jayne, First of all does use Boardmaker at home? If so you could bring examples of what he does at home???If you don't have stuff at home go to their website and download a few examples.(visual works for all of us) Also Mayer gives parents about half price on Boardmaker which would be about $150 if you need to purchase it( you must tell them that you are a parent). There is a boardmaker yahoo group that does have alot of teachers that use Boardmaker who might give you some good tips..but I'm not sure on this short of notice. Just emphasize how really needs the visual and scheduling to be successful and how Boardmaker is on of the best ways for him and alot of other students. Also try to have it written into his IEP so it will follow him. Hope this helped ...you may even call Mayer and ask them if they have any thoughts...they have..if you don't have their # it is 1-..Good Luck! another thought see if one of the other school in the district own it? Guest guest
Hi Trish, Yes, does use BM at home - I was thinking it would be smart to bring in examples, thank you. I also thought about the $150 BM for Parents. I told his teacher if we don't get it, I'll buy it! I'm so sick of him not having the tools he needs. Good idea to see if the other schools have it - someone must by golly! thanks Trish, Jayne Trish Sutter wrote: Hi Jayne, First of all does use Boardmaker at home? Guest guest
Hi Jayne, I may be too late to help you with my suggestions. I spent my day at a food fair but not as much fun as it may sound. Is boardmaker on 's IEP as an AT accomodation? This is an IEP issue as they are not implementing his communication program. You mentioned that you are worried about the para. If it's on his IEP you have no worries. I would make the principal aware and call the district sped director followed up with a letter in writing recapping your complaint and conversation. I would ask how much longer it would take for the equipment to be delivered to the classroom. If you are not given a answer that is acceptable file a formal state complaint. Guest guest
Jayne, One of the parents at our school applied for a grant and asked for boardmaker software and printers for the school. She got a check for $1,000. If you would like more information on this particular grant, let me know. charlyne olko wrote: Hi Jayne, I may be too late to help you with my suggestions. Guest guest
Jayne, sorry to get back with you late. I have been out of town. Question: Are they not breaking laws with not providing him with the appropriate education by having what he needs to be successful to his education? Do you have anyone who can go with you such as someone from the local DS society or Autism group? I am going to try to find the website that has pictures from the boardmaker will get back to you. Let me know about the other questions.
