I am Leah, mom to Ashton who has ds-asd... not sure where she is on the spectrum, but she is...lol she will be 15 in july..... I also have Cameron who is almost 11.... I am a former military person myself....was in the Navy married to an Army...... sighhhh thank god not anymore.... We lived in Germany for three years and most of Ashton's medical care was done at Landstuhl since we lived right outside of Landstuhl in Ramstein...... Walter has fond memories as well... they used to medi=vac us there when Landstuhl didn't have what she needed.. As for the DOD schools, I loved their developmental preschool....... Ashton also went to the CDC on post and they included her from day one.... I miss Europe tremendously..... but I think life over there as a single mom with a special needs child would be more challenging that here.... at least in the us you can get on a waiver list and hopefully get your child services before they put you in the ground....... hehehhe Anyways, I am sorry for rambling.... its 500am and I have a migraine...... again welcome to our group and I hope your find the support,encouragement and answers that the rest of us had.... However, with her medical issues ... the professionals took their time diagnosing Alli. Side-note ~ Alli is a gorgeous, sweet little angel. Devin, our almost 14 year old with DS has had quite an extensive medical history also. Prematurity (2 1/2 months early), O2 for a year and half, 15 surgeries, G-tube for 6 years, only takes a soft diet, etc. Now, he is a fine young man with a lovely sense of humor ... has displayed some " Autistic tendencies " for many years. I am a RN, however, I haven't worked for many years. Well, I take that back ..... I have worked as a nurse in " our home " for many years! I look forward to learning and getting to know others in similar situations. It's very difficult being over-seas and managing with medical, special ed, IEP's, etc. We attend the Dept. of Defense Schools and they have been very good for the most part. Our medical care for Alli has been on the economy .... but the British health-care is different from " ours " . They have been very kind to us and I feel like we are getting good care. We have 5 adopted children ,Kate 14, 16, Tim 18, Matt 22, Andy 24,Jay 29..oops 30!. We have 3 bio kids , 36, , 34 and 29. Just the 4 youngest are at home. The 5 youngest have Down syndrome. Andy and Kate are on the autism spectrum.Andy " big time " and Kate just a hint., It sounds like you have been really using that RN degree at home.. Wow! I am glad to hear the UK system is working for you. How long do you expect to be there? Do you live in Military housing? Or in a " regular " neighborhood? Do you get on with the " Locals " ? I am so thankful for the support I receive on this list - I consider these women dear friends of mine even though most of us have never met in person! It feels so good to know that others understand exactly what you're going through - chances are, someone is usually experiencing the same problem you're having at any given time! LOL! My name is Jayne and I'm also an Air Force wife! My husband, , is currently working a Joint Job with the Navy and we're living in Virginia. Before this job, he flew the B-1B. Due to his flying a Bomber, we were never stationed overseas. I can't even imagine the difficulties of raising a special needs child overseas, my hat is off to you! I'm glad to hear the medical care is going well for you, I'm always worried that Tricare is going to " turn " on us, but so far - they've been pretty good to us. It's a matter of knowing how to code the service, I guess. I have 3 children: 14 1/2, Emma 9 1/2, and 7 on April 22nd! has Ds and Autism, we rec'd the diagnosis in November of 2004 after suspecting it since he was about 3 1/2! It took me a while to realize my gut wasn't lying! LOL! You have been busy working as Mommy Nurse for your family, 15 surgeries for Devin - good gravy! So glad to hear he's doing well. Alli is adorable, I'm sure - they all have that extra dose of cuteness and charm that's found on the 21st chromosome! I'd love to hear more about your family and you'll have to post a picture on the ds/asd home page under photos. I'm interested in the blood issues you've had with Alli. We are seeing a Hematologist next week after years of 's WBC count being low. I'm nervous for what it might be but it also could just be his " norm " . was just recently diagnosed with Hypothyroidism and is about 10 days into his new life on Synthroid. It's like having a 2 year old in some ways again, he's suddenly so busy now that he feels good! We also just found out that he was severly constipated, had no idea as he was having BM's - an X-ray found the issue. Amazing how behaviors can improve once you rid yourself of a little extra baggage!!! We're also seeing the Pulmonologist next week to most likely set up a sleep study to find out if the sleep apnea that has returned is obstructive or central, he had a T & A at 2 1/2yrs old. So I've been wearing my nurse hat too this past year - I earned my degree through Google though! It's specialist after specialist in between the common colds and flu and injuries that plague the rest of my family - never a dull moment! Just curious where Home is for you and do you get to the States much? How long have you been in England? What base are you stationed at?
