Guest guest
My husband came home yesterday with a list of job openings in several cities. He works for the feds and in the position he's in now, he really can't go any higher unless he goes into management, which he really doesn't want to do. I'm curious if any of you have had experience with the following cities and whether or not they would offer good services for kids with autism: Phoenix, AZ Westminster, CO (Denver area) Hartford, CT New Haven, CT Reno, NV Holtsville, NY (Long Island) New York, NY Portland, OR burg, PA Richmond, VA Staunton, VA (in the Shenandoah Valley area) Thanks for any help! Last email I got from him he said sometime in 2006 he was hoping to start taking his old patients back. He is awesome. He helped with Trisha's IEP and attended via phone a few of her IEP's last year. Guest guest
burg, PA -Moderately sized walkable city. School system - as in all places depends on the school . State law encourages inclusive practice and one has the Gaskin case law to help you (altho it is being challenged. Hershey MEd Center close to burg with GREAT developmental peds team under the auspices of Penn State. And great OT depaartment. Medicaide will pay for OT, PT outsside of school. Waiver is available in PA. There is respite available and a respite house in Dauphin County. There is a camp both day and overnite but I would check how it is now (Camp Sertoma). I was not happy with it 5 years ago, but all places change. But PA is pretty low on the UCP list. Guest guest
Breinigsville PA-Parkland SD is one of the best in the area. Tori attends the Fogelsville Elementary School fully included except for pull outs for therapies and receives great staff support. Since moving to a new county,-we are on the waiting list for FDF waiver. We have respite care finally which is fantastic. Lots of Provider 50 providers.. 1 1/2 hrs. from Phila. where Tori's Dev. Ped is located (Children's Hospital of Phila). Tori attends 's Smile (camp) during the summer and loves it. Moved to Lehigh County from Northampton County and love it. We also have the local DS Support Group and Clinic very close to us, as well as the local chapter of the Autism Society of America. Liz-Mom to Tori 6 yrs. Guest guest
I also lived outside of Richmond in Powhatan COunty. School system is inclusive because they are so small. The OT department was great. Classroom options not good for children who were not merely learning disabled. Not bad medical care in Richmond. Great PEdiatrician and father of a person with DS - Harry Gewanter, MD. Could be enough to move there!!! Cost of living faair to middling. VA taxes are pretty high though and they tax everything. Guest guest
Hi Tina, I live in Ct closer to the Ma. border approx 20 miles from Hartford. We have some good school districts and some not so good. I am somewhat familiar with the districts past the New Haven area too. They also have good and bad but have active autism and sped orgs. I often find myself traveling to that end of the state to attend workshops. It depends on what type of program and services you are looking for. A class action suit that was in litagation for 10 yrs was finally settled a few years ago to improve access to the general classroom for all students with intellectual disabilities. If your leaning more toward inclusion name your school. As far as respite etc not too great. All children go through the DMR and they do provide funding on need but you are responsible to find the employees, goods and services. I haven't had the best experience with them but I do know a few younger mothers that they have helped with everything without issues. They have very good things to say about their caseworkers and everything they have been able to do for them in a timely manner. It's possible that agency has made good changes in that area.
